Liner Notes: Harold Courlander
[Notes]
Blind harmonica player and singer Sonny Terry recorded a few records during the 1930s and 1940s, but found wider fame in the folk revival of the 1950s and 1960s. This recording features a washboard band—an ensemble that includes washboard, washtub bass (a development from the African earth bow), bones, and sometimes guitar, or as heard here, harmonica.

Dock Boggs (banjo/vocals) Kate Peters Sturgill (guitar/vocals)
[Notes]
These selections are from a Dock Boggs concert at Appalachian State University (Boone, NC) on November 11, 1966. Accompanying Dock on guitar and singing is Kate Peters Sturgill. Both were from near Norton in Wise County, Virginia (Kate helped her cousin, A. P. Carter collect songs in the 1930s). Dr. Cratis Dearl Williams, founding Dean of the ASU Graduate School, and who is considered the father of Appalachian studies, arranged for the concert. Wilson Roberts was in attendance and recalls, "…the room was small, the lighting allowing for easy eye to eye contact between audience and performer.” There are several references to Doc Watson who, with his son Merle, was in the audience." Dock also talks about the origins of some of his songs and how he came to make them his own. Three tapes of the concert were made, all of which were misplaced over the years until Wilson Roberts tracked down the one remaining copy represented on this CD. – Lynn Frederick, from information provided by Wilson Roberts & Mike Seeger "Recordings for sale and information about the musicians and collectors can be found at www.fieldrecorders.org."

June Lazare (guitar/vocals)
Liner Notes: June Lazare, Designer: Irwin Rosenhouse
[Notes]
Released in 1966, this collection of twenty evocative folk songs illuminates a perhaps-unrecognizable New York City. In contrast to the nineteenth century world of gang violence, melodrama, corruption, and river pirates they chronicle, these songs are presented with simplicity and charm. For example, listen to Lazare tell the tale of the great police fight of 1857 while providing basic guitar accompaniment.

[Notes]
Although best known for its jazz releases, Fred Gennett's self-named Gennett Records label also did extensive recording in the rural folk genre, tracking various singers and string bands from the South in the 1920s and 1930s. This expansive four-disc set compiled by Chris King collects nearly 100 of these rare sides issued between 1927 and 1934, including early recordings by Ernest Stoneman, the Red Fox Chasers, Fiddlin' Doc Roberts, and a trio of lovely claw hammer banjo pieces from John Hammond. Modern country grew out of these kinds of back-porch performances, and what they lack in polish and sleekness they more than make up for with pure heart and soul.

[Notes]
1928 Edison Recordings contains all 22 tracks that Ernest Stoneman recorded for Edison in 1928. On these sessions, he was backed by a string band, which gave him and his autoharp a fuller sound, yet this music remains pure, direct and rural -- his versions of traditional numbers like "The Prisoner's Lament," "I Remember Cavalry" and "Fallen By the Wayside" are startling in their openness.

The New Harmony Sisterhood Band, formed in the mid-seventies from among students at the Goddard-Cambridge Graduate School for Social Change, draws on the folk idiom for style, and the women's liberation movement for inspiration. The collective sings of the realities of working women and oppressed women, women who are role models as activists (Sojourner Truth) and liberation fighters. Liner notes include a brief biography of the band and of its members as well as song lyrics and chords for each of the album's tracks.

Male and female singers (choral) Shape-note singers (choral)
Producer and Recorder: Frederic Ramsey and Amelia J. Ramsey, Designer: Ronald Clyne
[Notes]
This 1970 release records the shape note singing convention in Houston, Mississippi. As is the tradition with shape note signing, songs are first sung using notes "fa-so-la-mi," then with lyrics. Each voice part is equally balanced, consequently submerging the tune because all parts (except bass) are sung by both men and women. Liner notes compiled by Amelia Ramsey include a history of shape note singing and background on each song. An illustrated essay by Frederic Ramsey Jr. provides more information on the Mississippi community.

A.P. Carter (vocals) Sara Carter (guitar/autoharp/vocals) Joe Carter (guitar/vocals) Janette Carter (autoharp/vocals)
[Notes]
While they may not have been the most dynamic of the Appalachian string bands of the early '20s, the Carter Family was certainly the most subtly innovative, beginning with Maybelle Carter's bass string-heavy guitar playing. Combined with A.P. Carter's knack for spotting a good song and the trio's clear, haunting vocal style, the music they made has given them a secure spot as country's first big stars. More importantly, A.P.'s collection of Appalachian folk songs (although he is listed as the composer of many of them, he simply collected and refined them) has given American country music a solid historical base and he undoubtedly saved countless songs from oblivion (songs like "Coal Miner's Blues," "No Depression," "Engine 143," and "The Little Black Train" can have their survival into the 21st century traced to the versions that the Carter Family recorded). The Carter Family's recording career officially ended on October 14, 1941 when the original line up of A.P., Sara, and Maybelle did a final session for Victor Records, but it wasn't really the end of the story. Sometime preacher and borderline con man Clifford Spurlock approached A.P. a dozen or so years later about reuniting the trio for a series of recordings for his Acme Record Company. Maybelle had established herself as an artist in her own right by this time, so A.P. took Sara and their children Janette and Joe Carter into the studio for sessions in 1952 and then again four years later in 1956, essentially tracking do-overs of previous Carter Family songs like "Keep on the Sunny Side," "Wildwood Flower," and "Wabash Cannonball" along with several religious and sacred titles and the occasional new song. Most of these "comeback" recordings were either never officially released or were distributed poorly and this two-disc, 58-track set is the first time they've all been compiled and assembled together. There's nothing startling here (unless you count the corny and intrusive train sound effects that someone thought would be a good idea to add to "Wabash Cannonball"), and while "new" songs like the "Railroading on the Great Divide" and "The Titanic" are minor treasures, these Acme sessions function more as an addendum to the earlier Victor material rather than as any kind of major restatement of the basic template. That said, collectors will love this set, and if the Carter Family didn't exactly invent the wheel with these 1950s recordings, they didn't really have to, since they pretty much perfected the wheel thirty years earlier. -- AllMusic Review by Steve Leggett

The autoharp, invented in the 1870s and a fad in the 1890s, became a virtuoso instrument among the artists featured here as well as other players in the early to mid 20th century. Spirited breakdowns, sentimental and gospel songs—some played as instrumentals—and even a bluegrass song are presented here in this re-release of the only documentary of traditional Southern autoharp players. Includes 14 previously unissued tracks. Recorded, edited, and annotated by Mike Seeger. Song notes by Charles Wolfe. 32-page booklet. 38 tracks; 72 minutes

Comprised of more than twenty-five musicians, The New Golden Ring presents warm and full-sounding renditions of traditional Anglo-American folk songs, played out of a deep love for tradition and the performance of music as a communal act. Among those heard with The New Golden Ring are Folk-Legacy founders Sandy and Caroline Paton, and frequent Folk-Legacy contributors Joe Hickerson, Ed Trickett, and Howie Mitchell.

[Notes]
The Bluegrass Album Band is a bluegrass supergroup consisting of A-list session players and established bandleaders who got together in the early '80s to record an album of straight-ahead bluegrass standards; the result was called simply The Bluegrass Album, and it was so popular that the same pickup group (in slightly changing configurations) made five more such recordings over the course of the next 15 years. This compilation focuses on their renditions of songs either written or made famous by the great Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs, known to most Americans as the composers and performers of the theme from The Beverly Hillbillies. Led by the rich voice and powerful guitar playing of Tony Rice, the Bluegrass Album Band never sound less than completely tight and assured, and on timeless material like "The Old Home Town," "I'll Never Shed Another Tear," and the charming novelty tune "Head Over Heels," their affection for their illustrious musical forebears is both obvious and infectious. J.D. Crowe's banjo playing, which in other contexts can get a bit adventurous, here pays explicit tribute to the metronomic solidity of the classic Scruggs sound, and Bobby Hicks' fiddling is similarly old school. The Bluegrass Album Band's full-length albums are a better value for your money (this collection is offered at mid-price, but contains only a half-hour of music), but there's no denying the consistently high quality of the music on this one.-- AllMusic Review by Rick Anderson

A chance meeting with Uncle Dave Macon and a great deal of talent brought Sam and Kirk McGee first to Macon's act and then to the first broadcasts of the Grand Ole Opry radio show. On this 1957 recording, Arthur Smith plays fiddle, Sam picks the banjo, and Kirk backs them on guitar.

A unique musical culture flourishes in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas and southern Arizona: Yaqui Pascola dance, Tohono O'odham fiddle band music, and the more contemporary Native American Chicken Scratch sound with traditional conjunto polkas and corridos, Latino-influenced big bands, northern Mexican and German-rooted norteno, modern conjunto and orquestra Tejana. Licensed from four small regional record labels that specialize in this music. In addition to five American Indian tracks, this album also includes 13 Hispanic and Southwestern American songs. 56 minutes

[Notes]
There's something both admirable and odd about trying to faithfully recreate music made in the early part of the 20th century. There are many currently doing it, but those who do it best somehow accentuate the timeless themes of the music, rather than treat it with undo reverence. NYC duo Eden Brower and John Heneghan do precisely that, and this third album is another pleasant collection of cherished old time tunes. As a dedicated old time archivist, Heneghan certainly knows his stuff, and none of the duo's choices on Drunken Barrel House Blues can be faulted. However, Eden and John clearly don't make music for misanthropic record collectors. Their vocals rarely approach the passion that the original recordings possess, but Heneghan is a more than accomplished guitarist, and the overall energy of the performances will appeal to those with no affinity for scratchy 78s.

[Notes]
Charlie Parr’s newest album, Last of the Better Days Ahead, is a collection of powerful new songs about how one looks back on a life lived, as well as forward on what’s still to come. Its spare production foregrounds Parr's poetic lyricism, his expressive, gritty voice ringing clear over deft acoustic guitar playing that references folk and blues motifs in Parr's own exploratory, idiosyncratic style.

"Come all you jolly fellows and listen to my song. It's all about the shantyboys and how they get along." [The Lumber Camp Song] In this collection of Songs for Woodworkers Joe Glazer definitely captures the essence of the jolly spirit of the men and women that often worked in rather harsh and dangerous conditions. In celebration of the International Woodworkers of America's 40th anniversary, this album pays tribute to one of America's greatest unions with songs such as "Talking IWA" and "The Lumberman's Alphabet."
