Peggy Seeger (guitar/banjo/fiddle/vocals)
[Notes]
It could not have been an easy task for Peggy Seeger to choose the 22 tracks for this album from the 43 featured in her mother’s 1950 publication, Animal Folk Songs for Children. Her mother was the influential musician, educator, and folklorist Ruth Crawford Seeger, who drew on field recordings archived in the Library of Congress for the book. A joyful album for children and adults, the music on this recording tells tales of little brown dogs, old frogs, pretty squirrels, and cross-eyed gophers, while the liner notes divulge the songs’ intriguing origins and lyrics. Although many of the songs have been passed down through generations with little more than perhaps some hand-clapping and foot-tapping, Seeger provides simple guitar, banjo, and fiddle accompaniment.

[Notes]
A collection of Christmas Folksongs by Ruth Crawford Seeger selected and performed by her daughters; Peggy, Barbara and Penny and with children from the South Boston Music School. This compilation of less-commonly known Christmas songs represents a variety of Folksongs that find their origin in European and British Isles Ballads, as well as several African-American spirituals, hollers and chants from the slave era that express a deeply spiritual celebration of Christmas. Liner notes include history of each song by Charles and Peggy Seeger.

[Notes]
Sonya Cohen Cramer (1965–2015) was raised in a family committed to revitalizing the oldest songs of the American musical canon. Like her father John Cohen of The New Lost City Ramblers, Sonya shared a belief in the transformative qualities of folk songs and traditional ballads. You've Been a Friend to Me is the first collection featuring Sonya's singing, and it reveals the full arc of her musical life through collaborations with her aunt Peggy Seeger, uncle Pete Seeger, Elizabeth Mitchell, Daniel Littleton, and the folk-fusion group Last Forever. While shaped by the roots of her family tree, the radiating and clear sound of Sonya's voice is distinctly her own.

[Notes]
The story is basically this: a soldier is dying, evidently of venereal disease he contracted from a young woman, and he requests a funeral. Hear how this story has been spun over centuries into a whole collection of similarly themed songs, the earliest possibly dating to 1790. In this recording we are essentially witnessing the evolution of the Anglo-Saxon ballad tradition.

[Notes]
The Best of Broadside, Anthems of the American Underground from the Pages of Broadside Magazine. Eighty-nine songs, including some never commercially released. Compiled and annotated by Jeff Place and Ronald D. Cohen. A five CD boxed set. Broadside was a small underground magazine smuggled out of a New York City housing project in a baby carriage, filled with new songs by artists who were too creative for the folkies and too radical for the establishment. A still-underground Bob Dylan, Janis Ian, Rev. Frederick Douglass Kirkpatrick, Phil Ochs, Malvina Reynolds, Buffy Sainte-Marie, Pete Seeger, and dozens of others first published songs like "Blowin' in the Wind," "Little Boxes," and "Society's Child," in Broadside. The Best of Broadside features 89 songs from the Folkways collection, tapes from the Broadside magazine office, and some tracks released on other labels. The set contains a variety of performers, topics, and musical styles that tell tales spanning the 25 years of the Broadside era (1962-1988), but many of them address contemporary issues as well, since the new millennium has not see the end of warfare, nuclear threat, ethnic conflict, immigrants' suffering, women's unequal rights, ecological devastation, and social injustice. This is the underground music that fueled the innocent-sounding Folk Revival on the one hand and the explosions of angry rock and rap on the other. The Best of Broadside brings an era, its musicians, and its many stories to a new audience. The extensive notes feature the graphics of the original Broadside magazine and provide information on the careers of its many musicians with extensive discographies, the stories behind most of the songs as well as their full texts. They also describe the dramatic history of the magazine itself—a remarkable achievement of dedicated musicians and social activists.

Before photography, painted panoramas were often the only images the general public saw of distant lands. One such panorama from 1848, of "wondrous scenes of whaling and faraway islands," inspired a movie about the whaling industry; this album provides the musical score, in addition to familiar whaling songs set in New England, along the coast of South America, and on the Eastern Shore. Liner notes include images of the panorama, background information on whaling, and notes and lyrics for each song.

[Notes]
Songs of the American labor movement over the 20th century called for just wages, dignity, and a fair shake. They voiced grievances, affirmed the value of the worker to society, and expressed hope for life in a more just world. Classic Labor Songs from Smithsonian Folkways is a collage of these voices—champions of the movement, singing songs with a passion and love for their fellow workers that rings just as true today as it did then. Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger, Joe Glazer, the Almanac Singers, and more chronicle the history of the American labor movement in stirring song.

[Notes]
It could not have been an easy task for Peggy Seeger to choose the 22 tracks for this album from the 43 featured in her mother's 1950 publication, Animal Folk Songs for Children. Her mother was the influential musician, educator, and folklorist Ruth Crawford Seeger, who drew on field recordings archived in the Library of Congress for the book. A joyful album for children and adults, the music on this recording tells tales of little brown dogs, old frogs, pretty squirrels, and cross-eyed gophers, while the liner notes divulge the songs' intriguing origins and lyrics. Although many of the songs have been passed down through generations with little more than perhaps some hand-clapping and foot-tapping, Seeger provides simple guitar, banjo, and fiddle accompaniment.

[Notes]
Mike and Peggy Seeger are the slightly less-famous folksinging siblings of Pete Seeger. Each is actually very well known in folkie circles, but neither has enjoyed the worldwide fame of older brother Pete, though each has been equally dedicated to the performance and preservation of traditional American (and, to some extent, British) tunes and songs; Mike founded the New Lost City Ramblers during the late-'50s folk boom in New York City, while Peggy famously collected and published children's folk songs and eventually married the great English folksinger Ewan MacColl (who wrote "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" for her). The two siblings followed different personal and musical paths over the years, but got back together in 2008, shortly before Mike's death from cancer at age 75, to record a program of songs that they had learned from their mother, the composer Ruth Crawford Seeger. Both are multi-instrumentalists, and on this album they switch instruments regularly, playing various combinations of banjo, fiddle, guitar, slide guitar, harmonica, piano, and other instruments, both of them singing as well. Many of the songs will be familiar to their fellow folkies: numbers like "Little Birdie," "Old Bangum," and "My Home's Across the Blue Ridge Mountains" all exist in scores if not hundreds of versions. Others will be less familiar, and surprisingly (given the Seeger family's unapologetic political leanings) only one of them -- the wry "The Farmer's the Man" -- deals in any direct way with the predations of capital. Everything is sung with warm, sweet-spirited directness and the playing is often close to virtuosic, but the sound quality leaves a little bit to be desired; it's rather muted and dull, as if it had been recorded 40 or 50 years earlier. Still, the Seegers' love for the music and for each other comes through loud and clear, and the album is a treasure.-- AllMusic Review by Rick Anderson

One such panorama from 1848, of "wondrous scenes of whaling and faraway islands," inspired a movie about the whaling industry; this album provides the musical score, in addition to familiar whaling songs set in New England, along the coast of South America, and on the Eastern Shore. [Notes]
Political themes run powerfully through this 1978 recording, written and performed by husband and wife Ewan MacColl (1915–1989) and Peggy Seeger (b. 1935). Songs cover apartheid, domestic abuse, and worker's rights. MacColl and Seeger point out that writing and singing political songs is an age-old tradition, and they hope that the songs on this album will be useful weapons in the arsenal of those who are "against the brutal exploitation of the working-class, against the senseless waste of human and natural resources and against the pernicious disease of racism." Liner notes include song lyrics for each of the tracks.

Peggy Seeger and Tom Paley, both New York, are brilliant exponents of American instrumental traditions. Guitar, banjo, autoharp and dulcimer weave a delicate majesty on a great selection of traditional material. This stunning collection, recorded in London in 1964 by Bill Leader, is a powerful example of their musical accuity and has been an influence on many younger performers. Originally a Topic Record (12T113), published in England in 1964.
