[Notes]
What's a Wobbly? Legend has it that a Chinese cook in a railroad gang while proudly announcing that he was a member of the IWW (Industrial Workers of the World—a union formed to organize all workers) was heard to say he was a member of the "I-Wobbly-Wobbly." Despite their humorous nickname, the members of IWW experienced tremendous struggles which were often documented through song. Starting as a one-paged leaflet headed by the words: ""Sing and fight! Right was the tyrant king who said: 'Beware of a movement that sings’" the IWW’s Little Red Song Book soon grew to include dozens of songs including Ralph Chaplin’s "Solidarity Forever." As a special treat, this album also includes excerpts from Chaplin’s speech at a woodworker's convention in 1960.

[Notes]
Tony Rice, one of the most innovative guitarists to emerge from the "third generation" of bluegrass musicians, returns to his roots on TONY RICE PLAYS AND SINGS BLUEGRASS, his first real bluegrass album since 1977. This collection of classics, mostly from the '50s and '60s, is given an exuberant reading by Rice and his band of bluegrass veterans. Rice's lead vocals evoke the "high lonesome" sound of Bill Monroe. His guitar work is stunning in its attack, rhythmic intensity, and choice of notes--his solo on Lester Flatt's "I'll Stay Around" twists and turns, hits a few pungent blue notes, and is gone, all in eight bars, while the guitar break on "Thunderclouds of Love" explodes in a flurry of notes and slurred jazz chords. Dobro star Jerry Douglas adds his unmistakable fluid touch. Bill Emerson, a founding member of the Country Gentlemen, is on hand to play some hellified banjo and to pass the torch. Balancing respect for tradition with modern virtuosity and willingness to take risks, TONY RICE PLAYS AND SINGS BLUEGRASS is about as good as it gets. -- AllMusic Review by AllMusic

[Notes]
YOU CAN'T judge a band by the company it keeps -- or can you? After listening to "Delinquent Minor" by the local acoustic trio Grazz Matazz, it hardly seems a coincidence that such stellar instrumentalists as Jethro Burns, Mike Auldridge, Bela Fleck and Pete Kennedy would want to contribute to this album. They know a good thing when they hear it. Take the opening tune: Arlo Guthrie's "Mapleview Rag," while a nifty showcase for Auldridge's Dobro, ultimately leaves no doubt that Grazz Matazz' Al Petteway (on guitar) and Akira Otsuka (on mandolin) can play in the big leagues. Fleet yet expressive, their solos distill the rag's southwestern flavor and fit nicely alongside the playing of fiddler Phil Bloch and banjo player Carl Fanning. The remaining member of the band -- rhythm guitarist, pianist and vocalit Pat Petteway -- makes her debut on a finger- popping rendition of Dan Hicks' "Walkin' One and Only." Petteway's reedy soprano voice is just right for western swing tunes. But it also has a decidedly plaintive edge at times, especially on the traditional tune "One Morning in May" and the jazz standard "After You've Gone," delightful performances both.
