[Notes]
Highway Prayers, the major-label studio debut from Billy Strings, is a coming out party for the bluegrass wunderkind. Not that Strings necessarily needs an introduction. Over years of touring punctuated by a handful of acclaimed records on the legendary Americana imprint Rounder, the Michigan native has developed a quicksilver style that has earned him widespread appeal and industry recognition: Home, his second record, won the Grammy for Best Bluegrass Album in 2021, right around the time his fleet flat-picking found an enthusiastic reception among jam band freaks. Without ever abandoning his roots in traditional bluegrass, Strings ventured into other musical styles, demonstrating his facility with rock, metal, and blues, sounding equally at ease with bluegrass legends Béla Fleck and David Grisman as he is with rapper Post Malone or jam titans Phish.

[Notes]
Tuttle’s never-waste-a-note guitar picking propels this collection of instant bluegrass classics that careen lickety-split around the hills and valleys of high lonesome ballads and backwoods tales of mystery and murder. A bluegrass festival on a single album, Crooked Tree shimmers and shines with transporting harmonies, lilting fiddles, thrumming banjos, crystalline mandolins, scampering dobros, and driving guitars.

[Notes]
Home begins with 30 seconds of down-tempo guitar arpeggio and fiddle birdsong. It ends with the full quartet — Billy Strings (guitar), Billy Failing (banjo), Royal Massat (upright bass), and Jarrod Walker (mandolin) — crashing through a cover of Bill Monroe's "Big Sandy River." In between, there’s an hour of bluegrass played with a 27-year-old's intensity, a hearty dose of psychedelia, and undeniable star appeal. Born William Apostol, Strings has it all: incomparable chops, powerful vocals, and songwriting smarts.
