[Notes]
YOU CAN'T judge a band by the company it keeps -- or can you? After listening to "Delinquent Minor" by the local acoustic trio Grazz Matazz, it hardly seems a coincidence that such stellar instrumentalists as Jethro Burns, Mike Auldridge, Bela Fleck and Pete Kennedy would want to contribute to this album. They know a good thing when they hear it. Take the opening tune: Arlo Guthrie's "Mapleview Rag," while a nifty showcase for Auldridge's Dobro, ultimately leaves no doubt that Grazz Matazz' Al Petteway (on guitar) and Akira Otsuka (on mandolin) can play in the big leagues. Fleet yet expressive, their solos distill the rag's southwestern flavor and fit nicely alongside the playing of fiddler Phil Bloch and banjo player Carl Fanning. The remaining member of the band -- rhythm guitarist, pianist and vocalit Pat Petteway -- makes her debut on a finger- popping rendition of Dan Hicks' "Walkin' One and Only." Petteway's reedy soprano voice is just right for western swing tunes. But it also has a decidedly plaintive edge at times, especially on the traditional tune "One Morning in May" and the jazz standard "After You've Gone," delightful performances both. Executive Producer: Robert Hurwitz, Designer: Evan Gaffney, Photographer: Eric McNatt, Engineers: Joshua Vance Smith, Mark Petaccia, Robert C. Ludwig and Vance Powell
[Notes]
Mandolin god Chris Thile – former and current leader of Nickel Creek and the Punch Brothers, respectively – is generally known for kicking bluegrass forward: Check out his down-home covers of Radiohead's "Morning Bell" and Pavement's "Spit On A Stranger." This ridiculously blazing set with hot-shit Brooklyn guitarist Michael Daves, recorded at Jack White’s Third Man studio in Nashville (where they also cut a 7″ single with White, "Man In The Middle/Blue Night"), focuses instead on old timey material by Bill Monroe, Lester Flatt, and others. Dusty museum pieces they’re not: The uptempo jams are wild-picking shred fests, and the ballads cut deep. On a soulful reading of the traditional "Rain and Snow" (a Grateful Dead staple), the pair's high lonesome harmonies are hollered up like pleas from the depths of a coal mine. That's a place these city-slickers have probably never been. But no doubt they understand the rock-bottom blues. --Rolling Stone

They are songs with the rhythm of work in them, with the echo of anger against poverty and meanness. From the Mountains to the Sea with Jeff and Gerret Warner

"From the Mountains to the Sea is a two-hour live presentation with multimedia, focusing on the Anne and Frank Warner collection, one of the great treasures in the American Folklife Center archives, containing a wealth of material collected by the husband-and-wife team of folklorists from 1938 to 1966, as they traveled through rural America in search of old songs. This important collection contains such seminal field recordings as North Carolina farmer Frank Proffitt's rendition of the murder ballad "Tom Dooly." This field recording was adapted and recorded in 1958 by The Kingston Trio, whose version became a number one hit, won the very first Grammy in country music, and set off the folk boom of the 1960s. Frank Warner was also a popular folksinger, and the Warners' sons, Jeff and Gerret, got their start as musicians backing up their dad on his recordings and performances. They have been renowned performing musicians for more than 50 years. Career musicians and filmmakers, they created this two-hour live multimedia presentation about the Warner collection, featuring not only their own performances, but also the voices of the singers recorded by their parents across rural America, along with corresponding photographs of the tradition bearers and their homes. It is full of the warmth of the Warners and the country wit of their new friends. Jeff and Gerret grew up listening to the songs and stories of the traditional singers their parents met during their folksong collecting trips, and they offer valuable insights into the lives and adventures of one of the nation's most eminent families of folksong collectors. In so doing, they contribute immensely to our understanding of the Warner collection, one of the most important in the American Folklore Center archives. The event was co-sponsored by the Folklore Society of Greater Washington.

Cleaning up the badly polluted Hudson River and its environs has long been a cause that Pete Seeger has devoted himself to, even organizing the building of a sloop--the Clearwater--to promote the effort. Here he devotes a recording to songs relating to the river, which played a major role in the commercial life and early history of New York State, including the Revolutionary War. Both traditional and newly composed songs are included. Folk singer Ed Renehan (born 1956), who was a member of the board of the Clearwater, sings and plays guitar along with Seeger. William Gekle, who wrote the lyrics for five of the songs, also wrote the liner notes, which detail the context of each song and provide the lyrics.

Designer: Eric Von Schmidt, Liner Notes: Dick Fariña, Producer: Tom Costner, Engineer: Don Sollash
[Notes]
This obscure album, recorded in January 1963 at Dobell's record shop in London, is known primarily for a very famous session musician playing under a pseudonym. Blind Boy Grunt, aka Bob Dylan, contributed harmonica and backup vocals to half a dozen of the tracks (using that pseudonym, most likely, as he was under contract to a different label at the time). Fariña and Von Schmidt, already noted performers in the American coffeehouse folk scene, are the principal figures on this pretty typical '60s folk revival LP. The material and delivery are rooted in traditional folk forms, including jug band, blues, and Appalachian music, and are neither too dry nor too exciting. Certainly Fariña, the more talented of the front line pair, shows few flashes of the first-rate songwriting and arrangements that would flower on the albums he did in the mid-'60s with his wife Mimi Fariña. The one vivid flash of that brilliance is on the instrumental "Old Joe's Dulcimer," in which he unveils his considerable talents on the instrument. With its almost Indian-like drones, it could just about fit as one of the instrumentals on the Richard & Mimi Fariña albums, although the absence of Mimi Fariña's guitar accompaniment creates (if only in retrospect) a sonic gap. "Wobble Bird" (derived from the standard "Cuckoo") and "Wildwood Flower" (a vocal number which has some dulcimer) aren't bad, but really this is just another folk album of its time, notable primarily as a collector's item. If you're picking this up just for Dylan's contributions, be advised that those are pretty low-key; he doesn't contribute any songwriting or lead vocals. Also lending a hand on these sessions is Ethan Signer of the Original Charles River Valley Boys. (AllMusic Review by Richie Unterberger)

[Notes]
Beloved bluegrass trailblazers Hazel Dickens & Alice Gerrard are revered as pioneers of the form, who challenged the norm at a time when bluegrass remained largely in the purview of men. Nowhere is this more clear than on a set of newly unearthed recordings, Sing Me Back Home: The DC Tapes, 1965-1969, out September 21 on Free Dirt Records. Sourced from Alice's private archive and digitized with help from the Southern Folklife Collection at UNC Chapel Hill, the recordings invite us to witness the creative process of these towering figures—just two voices and a handful of instruments working out arrangements at home. Across 19 tracks the duo sings the classic country of The Carter Family, The Louvin Brothers, and Jimmie Rodgers; contemporary hits of the 1960s penned by Dolly Parton and Merle Haggard; and barn-burning traditional standards that blur the line between old-time and early bluegrass. Sing Me Back Home is a raw, unfiltered listen to Hazel & Alice at the height of their collaborative energy.

Purdy describes the several aspects of laundry preparation, such as sorting clothes by color, using the washer, and wrapping laundry for delivery. On a visit to the bakery, Purdy sings about the equipment frequently used for baking, including the proofer, the oven, and tubes used for decorating cakes. [Notes]
Songs of struggle which emerged from the coal mines, textile mills and acres of farmland, and spoke of issues important to the American laborer. Twenty-four songs written about the unprecedented industrialization of the 19th century, including Peg and Awl, The Farmer is the Man, and Winnsboro Cotton Mill Blues. Irwin Silber's notes provide a history of labor folk song and its role in American popular music. "Seeger's straightforward, sincere singing is accompanied by sparse, effective banjo and guitar...an important reissue." — Sing Out

[Notes]
This album by Pete Seeger focuses on environmental issues and offers inspiration and admiration for nature. The songs advocate awareness of the environment and appreciation for the splendor of nature ("God Bless the Grass"). "My Dirty Stream" for example, supports an environmental organization Seeger formed in 1966 called Hudson River Sloop Clearwater (aka Great Hudson River Revival or Clearwater Festival) that sought to clean up the heavily polluted Hudson River. The liner notes include a message written by then Supreme Court Justice William Douglas.

[Notes]
This is the best fucking thing right here. Banjos & fiddles, ballads & stories, all from one West Virginian family. Alan Jabbour & Carl Fleischhauer just went to the Hammons family’s home, asked all the right questions, and pointed the mic in all the right directions. Truly excellent display of old American traditions. The highlight is Maggie’s songs, and luckily she’s featured pretty prominently, because her voice is otherworldy. She’s also nearly incomprehensible with the thickest West Virginian accent you could imagine. I’m definitely a sucker for this kind of thing but this collection is on another level.

[Notes]
Recorded between 1946 and 1947. Woody Guthrie was one of the twentieth century's greatest poets and songwriters, and his songs about Sacco and Vanzetti include some of his best songs. The murder trial of Sacco and Vanzetti was one of this century's most controversial. Sacco and Vanzetti's story was dramatic; their front-page trial was filled with dubious procedures; and the years of appeals and their eventual execution led to protests around the world. These songs, written and recorded nearly twenty years later, have been carefully remastered from the original acetate discs and are presented with a previously unpublished letter by Guthrie to the judge in the case. Produced by Moses Asch. Reissue compiled by Anthony Seeger and Jeff Place.

Like other folksingers, her repertoire encompasses a variety of emotions: anger at needless poverty and exploitation, affirmation of self-help as a way of life, pleasure in love, solace in religion, peace in death. Sarah prodigious talent has permitted her to fuse disparate radical elements with traditional forms to create a handful of significant songs beyond the legacy of well-known material left to her by her family.

[Notes]
The Carolina Chocolate Drops, a contemporary string band trio who, under the watchful eye of mentor Joe Thompson, re-created the look, feel, and sound of a 19th century black North Carolina string, fiddle, and jug band ensemble, crafted their first studio recordings into perfect facsimiles of the group's influences. The Drops were always at their best on-stage, however, where the gospel stomp of those mountain rhythms and the kinetic energy the band gave off completed the feel of a living, breathing history lesson. Those old string bands could turn on a dime, and the Chocolate Drops reproduced that art, turning their live sets into a black string band revival show. The studio albums felt like they were a bit encased in glass compared to the live performances. For this outing, however, the Chocolate Drops found the perfect producer in Buddy Miller, who recorded the band live in a single room, and the result is a wonderfully immediate album that feels like a Saturday night house party-- complete with moonlight, dust flying from the carpet under the feet of dancers, and crickets and night bird calls out the open windows. The sound breathes, and the Drops shine. Traditional pieces like "Po' Black Sheep" become stomping revivals, born again in a new century. "Ruby, Are You Mad at Your Man?" becomes a clawhammer banjo-driven mountain blues, with Rhiannon Giddens' vocal making it seem like Janis Joplin just wandered into the party, a feat she repeats with the album's marvelous last track, "Pretty Bird" (complete with crickets in the background). The Carolina Chocolate Drops may be intent on reproducing a sound from over a century ago, but they do an amazing job of translating it into the 21st century without diminishing it. This set feels like a Saturday night throwdown under the summer stars. It almost seems timeless, perhaps because it defies time. (AllMusic Review by Steve Leggett)

[Notes]
Features a good cross-section of the musicrecorded commercially in the the 1920s and 30s by Ernest V. "Pop" Stoneman with his family and associates. Stoneman has not been held in high regard by some who value "the Galax Sound," for he was something of an opportunist who carved out a professional career for himself. Yet his repertoire sprang from the diverse streams of tradition found in his home area, and included ballads, sentimental songs, sacred songs, humorous songs, and instrumental music. Many of Stoneman's performances utilized the more or less standard string band alignment of fiddle, guitar, and banjo. Some of the most accomplished instrumentalists from Galax recorded with Stoneman, such as fiddlers Kahle Brewer and Eck Dunford. Stoneman was also one of the few early country musicians to record with a parlour organ, an instrument which has played a large role in many family music traditions in the South. (Reviewed by Paul L. This is the first commercial recording of the fiddle band music of the Tohono O'odham people of Southern Arizona. Utilizing instruments originally introduced by Spanish missionaries, the fiddle band sound is highly unique utilizing violins, guitar, and drums playing polkas, two-steps, and mazurkas. The result is an exciting sound and one of Southern Arizona's richest musical traditions.

Ramblin' Blues: David Davis & The Warrior River Boys

David Davis & The Warrior River Boys have long been recognized as contemporary leaders in the traditional bluegrass music scene. On their latest release Didn't He Ramble: Songs of Charlie Poole, they expand their base to include earlier influences of folk and acoustic music roots. Through a masterful and exciting collection of songs, originally recorded by the legendary Charlie Poole and his North Carolina Ramblers in the 1920s and 1930s, a generation before Bill Monroe is credited with founding bluegrass music, they show that you can create music that is both fresh and timeless. This album is greater than a simple tribute; The Warrior River Boys have reinvigorated this music, in a new form, with all the fire and energy of the originals. They take the legacy another step further, into the contemporary revival of traditional bluegrass. Didn't He Ramble: Songs of Charlie Poole not only breathes new life into Poole's work, but brings a spirit of fun that is as infectious as the music itself!

[Notes]
Recorded at Glaser Sound Studios, Nashville, on January 1972. As a member of Roy Acuff's Grand Ole Opry band, Bashful Brother Oswald played a dumb-hick hillbilly character for the sake of comic relief, his slapstick antics and clown-like apparel making him an audience favorite -- but his dobro playing was no joke. During the Depression, Oswald found work playing Hawaiian-style dobro music at a Flint, Mich., radio station. When he was picked up by Acuff later in the decade, he brought with him the weeping, island-flavored style of playing that is one of the defining characteristics of country music. While Oswald was not solely responsible for this sound, his role as a key player in the modern country vocabulary is indisputable. Although he worked mainly as a sideman, he did record a couple of solo efforts on which he sang as well as played, showcasing a taste for old-time Bluegrass and singing in a friendly, weathered voice.

Producer and Recorder: Howard Albert and Ron Albert, Designer: Gary Burden and R. Twerk & Co., Photographer: Joel Bernstein, Engineer: Steve Gursky
[Notes]
CSN featured strong writing from all three members, the last time for seventeen years that the band would compose songs and handle vocals without major assistance from outside sources. Many of Stills' songs on the album echo his marital problems, with "Dark Star" returning to the Latin rhythms he had favored all the way back to his Buffalo Springfield days. Crosby continued the existential probings consistent with much of his past work, and Nash offered both a radio-ready acoustic ballad with "Just a Song Before I Go", and an elaborate set piece re-creating a vision of an LSD experience that he had in Winchester Cathedral with "Cathedral". Many tracks were sweetened with a string section, a first on a CSNY project.

Producer: Sandy Roberton, Liner Notes: Fred Goerner, Photographer: Jeremy Ensor, Design – Seabrook Graves Aslett, Engineer: Jerry Boys
[Notes]
In just under three years, Ian Matthews split from Fairport Convention, went solo, formed Matthews' Southern Comfort - with whom he scored a number one U.K. hit - left the group at the height of its popularity, recorded three more records on his own (only two were released at this time) and in early 1972 started Plainsong, his fourth band in five years. And while his track record led one to believe that Plainsong may be just another short stay, the subsequent album, In Search of Amelia Earhart, proved to be worth the venture. Ian Matthews was of course the obvious draw, but Plainsong seemed to be formed as more of a collective effort, with lead guitarist Andy Roberts, who shares the lead vocal duties, the other focal point in the band. On the other hand, Matthews, whose folk and country-tinged tunes set the tone for the record, is the only member to contribute original material. Included among these is the thematic "True Story of Amelia Earhart," which along with the haunting "For the Second Time," leads a pack of five Matthews compositions that range from good to excellent. Elsewhere, Paul Siebel's heartbreaking "Louise," the dulcimer and harmony driven Appalachian gospel of "I'll Fly Away," and Roberts' readings of the playful "Yo Yo Man," Jim & Jesse's "Diesel on My Tail" and the mournful 1939 tale of "Amelia Earhart's Last Flight" are all highlights. Its title and artwork, along with notes by Charles Goerner on the flight and disappearance of Amelia Earhart and Frederick Noonan, gave In Search of Amelia Earhart the feel of a concept album, even though the title is nowhere to be found on the outside jacket and there are only two songs related to the subject contained within. It wasn't really a surprise when a follow-up, though recorded, failed to materialize, with the band parting ways on less than amicable terms, and Matthews going on to record two more records for Elektra. Still, In Search of Amelia Earhart fits nicely alongside the rest of his terrific early-'70's catalogue. (AllMusic Review by Brett Hartenbach)

Allen and Wakefield's music ranges from strictly traditional songs like "Little Maggie" to pieces introduced by Bill Monroe to sacred material, all with their hallmark close harmonies and tight instrumental backing. Like Monroe and Roscoe Holcomb, Allen's voice embodies the "high lonesome" sound.

Aretha Franklin featuring Keith Richards and Whoopi Goldberg - Jumpin' Jack Flash

In 1986, the song's title was used for the Whoopi Goldberg film Jumpin' Jack Flash. In addition to the Rolling Stones' version of the song, the film features Aretha Franklin's cover version for which Ronnie Wood and Richards played guitar, but Franklin played piano. This version is characterised by influences from the popular black music scene. Both the Rolling Stones' and Franklin's versions are on the film's original soundtrack recording.

[Notes]
Joan Baez also gave ten concerts at the Paris Olympics on their "Fare Thee Well Tou" tour in June 2018. Together with her fans, the folk icon reviews six decades of music. A unique, emotional evening. For Joan Baez music and social engagement belong together. The singer is one of the outstanding figures of the counterculture: she sang in Woodstock, raised her voice against the Vietnam War, demonstrated alongside Martin Luther King and denounced dictatorships all over the world. Concerns for which the American woman is as passionate today as in the 1960s. In early 2018 Joan Baez brought out a new album to the delight of her fans: "Whistle Down the Wind". Ten years earlier she had recorded on "Day After Tomorrow" songs by Tom Waits, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Josh Ritter and others. At the Olympia, her new songs and her famous hits and compositions by Bob Dylan are on the program. New, old and cover versions - what more could you want on a farewell tour? GOOD-BYE, JOAN

[Notes]
The Maddox Brothers & Rose were America's most colorful hillbilly band all right, and not just because they wore snazzy sequined Western suits that screamed louder than a blast of TNT. Everything they did was at the top of their lungs, from sister Rose's effectively braying twang and tittering, high-pitched asides to the brothers' nuclear-charged postwar fusion of boogie-woogie, Western swing, and California honky-tonk. Most colorful of all was the group's aesthetic--unabashed emotionalism on a poignant gospel ballad such as "When I Lay My Burden Down" alternating with broad comedy displayed on covers of "Milk Cow Blues" and "Honky Tonkin'." "Got a hillbilly band called Maddox and Rose ... [and] they play a boogie-woogie that'll wiggle your toes," Rose guffaws on "George's Playhouse Boogie." Never has such a colorful self-description been so accurate. --David Cantwell
