[Notes]
Conceived amidst profound change and calls for revolution, Shame and Sedition is the sound of Lula Wiles amplifying the present moment. Each song grew from personal revelations or yearning for collective reckoning, materializing into proclamations against powerful oligarchs, toxic relationships, media narratives, and the callousness capitalism demands. Sung in their instantly recognizable tight harmony, within a landscape of expansive electric guitars, dynamic currents of bass and drums, and intimate acoustic textures, the album sees Lula Wiles' sound deepening to give honest form to their trenchant lyrics. Shame and Sedition captures Lula Wiles at a pivotal juncture, as they critically examine today’s nuanced struggles and reconsider how our lives are lived.

The group is composed of banjo-playing patriarch Steve, his wife Phoebe on guitar and autoharp, and their five children: Claudia, Jennifer, Margaret, Jonathan, and Emily-Kate. This is the second of four albums they recorded for Folkways Records. One of the best-known songs heard here is the famous anti-war anthem "Masters of War," written and originally recorded by Bob Dylan. The Bergerfolk close with Peter Yarrow’s "Weave Me the Sunshine." Lyrics and instrumentation credits for all tracks are included in the liner notes.

[Notes]
So much has been said about the founding father of bluegrass music that it would be nice if there was an all-encompassing collection of Bill Monroe's music to accompany the legend. Although the almost-correctly titled Anthology comes close, there is still a wealth of Columbia and RCA-Victor recordings missing from this Decca-centric collection, which runs chronologically from 1950 to 1969 (with one final track from 1981). Unfortunately, this means that the classic lineup of Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs, with fiddler Chubby Wise and bassist Howard Watts, is not represented. Still, bluegrass luminaries Vassar Clements, Jimmy Martin, Kenny Baker, Del McCoury, Peter Rowan, and many others, all drifted in and out of the Blue Grass Boys during their twenty-some years, and make appearances on classic tracks like "Sally Goodin," "Uncle Pen," "Blue Moon of Kentucky," and "New Mule Skinner Blues." All told, this may be the perfect collection of Monroe's work for Decca, but it falls only slightly short of being the Bill Monroe Anthology.-- AllMusic Review by Zac Johnson

[Notes]
There was a remarkable seven-year gap in the recording of the tracks on this disc. After years of struggling for widespread success, the members of this seminal family trio finally parted ways. The material is terrific as usual, though some tracks sound a bit flat in the delivery. Perhaps the strain of maintaining a family group began to show in the performance of the tunes, as daughters Maybelle and Sara struggled for their own identity. Not the best of the Carter Family recordings, but certainly great. -- AllMusic Review by Tim Sheridan

[Notes]
"To me I sing love songs—sad songs—torchy songs better. Guess it's because I had such a hard, sad life from as far back as I can remember is why." Cryin' songs and dyin' songs are the substance of Creole Songbird Lizzy Miles' musical outpourings. Pianist Red Camp, banjoist Albert French and Tony Almerico's Parisian Room Band outpour right along with her in this late recording. And so we hear this scintillating blend of outpourings when "Mama don't allow no clarinet playin' in here...but Tony don't care what Mama don't allow, he's gonna play that clarinet anyhow." (Hear more of Miles' moans in COOK01182 Moans and Blues and COOK01184 Torchy Lullabies My Mother Sang Me.)

Each is actually very well known in folkie circles, but neither has enjoyed the worldwide fame of older brother Pete, though each has been equally dedicated to the performance and preservation of traditional American (and, to some extent, British) tunes and songs; Mike founded the New Lost City Ramblers during the late-'50s folk boom in New York City, while Peggy famously collected and published children's folk songs and eventually married the great English folksinger Ewan MacColl (who wrote "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" for her). The two siblings followed different personal and musical paths over the years, but got back together in 2008, shortly before Mike's death from cancer at age 75, to record a program of songs that they had learned from their mother, the composer Ruth Crawford Seeger. Both are multi-instrumentalists, and on this album they switch instruments regularly, playing various combinations of banjo, fiddle, guitar, slide guitar, harmonica, piano, and other instruments, both of them singing as well. Many of the songs will be familiar to their fellow folkies: numbers like "Little Birdie," "Old Bangum," and "My Home's Across the Blue Ridge Mountains" all exist in scores if not hundreds of versions. Others will be less familiar, and surprisingly (given the Seeger family's unapologetic political leanings) only one of them -- the wry "The Farmer's the Man" -- deals in any direct way with the predations of capital. Everything is sung with warm, sweet-spirited directness and the playing is often close to virtuosic, but the sound quality leaves a little bit to be desired; it's rather muted and dull, as if it had been recorded 40 or 50 years earlier. Still, the Seegers' love for the music and for each other comes through loud and clear, and the album is a treasure.-- AllMusic Review by Rick Anderson

[Notes]
During the middle decades of the 20th century, the factories of southwestern Ohio drew hundreds of thousands of migrants from Appalachia, including innumerable musicians. Industrial Strength Bluegrass celebrates the music that these migrants made and loved, and explores a pivotal moment in the history of bluegrass and country music at large. Produced by beloved performer and radio personality Joe Mullins, the collection features a stellar lineup of bluegrass stalwarts including Rhonda Vincent, Bobby Osborne, and Mullins himself, taking on tunes that have echoed across Ohio for decades. This group of some of the biggest names in bluegrass today pays tribute to the jubilant highs and lonesome lows of life amongst the factories and warehouses, reflecting the region’s rich culture and resilient people.

[Notes]
The words "bayou" and "bluegrass" don't often appear in the same sentence. Nevertheless, in 1961, music ethnologist Harry Oster asked banjoist/singer Jim Smoak to form a bluegrass band in Louisiana. The venture resulted in a recording of 21 songs played in a bluegrass style. The complete original recording session was issued by Arhoolie in 2002.

[Notes]
Collected by musician and producer Pat Dunford and musicologist Art Rosenbaum, the twenty songs and fiddle tunes on this album were chosen from a vast collection of recordings from their travels around Indiana in the early sixties. At the time, Indiana had been largely ignored by collectors and folk enthusiasts researching old-time music. Dunford and Rosenbaum wanted to present the songs and tunes remembered by Hoosier musicians, including master old-time fiddler John W. Summers, that were most characteristic of the state, fearing they might soon be all but gone. Liner notes include song lyrics, notes on the singers and fiddlers, and a bibliography.

[Notes]
Before photography, painted panoramas were often the only images the general public saw of distant lands. One such panorama from 1848, of "wondrous scenes of whaling and faraway islands," inspired a movie about the whaling industry; this album provides the musical score, in addition to familiar whaling songs set in New England, along the coast of South America, and on the Eastern Shore. Liner notes include images of the panorama, background information on whaling, and notes and lyrics for each song.

[Notes]
Tracy Schwarz, of New Lost City Ramblers renown, recorded Fiddler's Companion to answer questions beginning fiddlers often have about learning old-time music. He plays 11 standard tunes, first demonstrating the basic melody and then adding various ornamentation. Along with a good ear, a strong sense of patience, and a steady bow, this album is a great complement to a fiddler's music studies.

[Notes]
American writer and humorist Mark Twain wrote this ribald satire "1601" in 1876. Set in the court of Queen Elizabeth I, the story begins with an incident of flatulence and careens wildly into the subject of virginity. Twain clearly had fun with words and their hidden and not so hidden meanings. English-born self-styled minstrel Richard Dyer-Bennet gives a delightful reading of Twain's work and sings six bawdy classic folk songs to round out the recording. Brief liner notes accompany the recording

What's a Wobbly? Legend has it that a Chinese cook in a railroad gang while proudly announcing that he was a member of the IWW (Industrial Workers of the World—a union formed to organize all workers) was heard to say he was a member of the "I-Wobbly-Wobbly." Despite their humorous nickname, the members of IWW experienced tremendous struggles which were often documented through song. Starting as a one-paged leaflet headed by the words: ""Sing and fight! Right was the tyrant king who said: 'Beware of a movement that sings’" the IWW’s Little Red Song Book soon grew to include dozens of songs including Ralph Chaplin’s "Solidarity Forever." As a special treat, this album also includes excerpts from Chaplin’s speech at a woodworker's convention in 1960.

This album of "second takes" by Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger, and others is a collector's gem. The original liner notes—which include lyrics for each song—write, "On re-hearing, the spirit of the performances was so good that Folkways felt that it would be a shame not to have its many friends hear them."
