[Notes]
Today, many people are only aware of Woody Guthrie's songs for adults, such as "This Land Is Your Land," but Guthrie (1912–1967) was also a successful and prolific composer of songs for children. Filled with whimsy and enthusiasm, dealing with events in the lives of young children, the songs are as much fun to sing today as they were fifty years ago. Perhaps no performer, other than Guthrie himself, is as well qualified to sing these songs (intended primarily for children ages four to six) as Ramblin' Jack Elliott (born 1931). He lived for a time in the Guthrie household and so perfected Guthrie's style that Guthrie is supposed to have exclaimed, "Jack sounds more like me than I do!"

[Notes]
Folk music had been an integral part of American culture for decades. But the folk revival that flowered in the Coffee houses of New York’s Greenwich Village as the Fifties closed would inspire a new generation to pick up their acoustic guitars and play. To take yourself back to the halcyon days of Bob, Joanie and Tom Dooley, just press play on this superb 3 disc compilation.

BBC Arena - Woody Guthrie (1988)

New York City 1943
First transmitted in 1988, Arena presents a documentary programme exploring the life of Woody Guthrie, the travelling American singer-songwriter who paved the way for the likes of Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen.

Born in Okemah, Oklahoma in 1912, Guthrie became a spokesman for a whole generation of downtrodden Americans during the 1930s, with poignant songs like Vigilante Man, Pastures of Plenty and the anthemic, This Land is Your Land.

A1-A6: Songs by Woody Guthrie, B1-B6: Songs by Jimmie Rodgers
[Notes]
Ramblin' Jack Elliott (born 1931) was interested in cowboys from a young age; he ran away from his home in Brooklyn, New York, to join a rodeo at age 14. But he was also inspired by Woody Guthrie--he lived with the Guthrie family for a time, mastering Woody's vocal and guitar style so completely that Woody supposedly xclaimed, "Jack sounds more like me than I do!" Jimmie Rodgers (1897–1933), of Meridian Mississippi, was one of the first country music icons, but only after his worsening tuberculosis made it too difficult for him to continue as a railroad worker.
