[Notes]
Joe Glazer's musical efforts on behalf of workers and union struggles earned him the nickname "Labor's Troubadour." In 1970, he founded Collector Records, primarily to produce records supportive of the struggles of working men and women. In this recording, Joe sings topical songs from the 1960s and 1970s that are primarily of his own composition and are heavy on humor and satire. The subject matter ranges from civil rights to politics to defense of environmentalism. The Charlie Byrd Trio provides the accompaniment. The liner notes offer background information and historical context for the songs, biographical information about Glazer, and complete song lyrics.

He writes, "This album is dedicated to all the workers who lost limbs and lives on the railroads, to the John Henrys who built the Big Bend tunnels and the Casey Joneses who drove the big eight wheelers, to the waymen and the brakemen, the telegrapher and the firemen, the conductors and the switchmen, the clerks and the craftsmen, the planners and the builders; and, yes, to the hoboes who rode the rods and the empty boxcars."

[Notes]
Originally intended as a teaching aid for senior high school social studies and covering a broad scope of civic, government, economic, citizenship and immigration issues, this compilation provides a provocative mid-century impression of America culled from witnesses to the first half of the twentieth century. We are treated to songs from Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger and Malvina Reynolds; speeches from Theodore Roosevelt, Dwight Eisenhower, Martin Luther King, Jr. and Williams Jennings Bryan; so-called "brag talk" by cowboys; and pronouncement of an oath of loyalty by Chief John Oberly of the "Osage Tribe of Indians" affirming that he will not conspire with any political parties to overthrow the US government.

[Notes]
Songs of the American labor movement over the 20th century called for just wages, dignity, and a fair shake. They voiced grievances, affirmed the value of the worker to society, and expressed hope for life in a more just world. Classic Labor Songs from Smithsonian Folkways is a collage of these voices—champions of the movement, singing songs with a passion and love for their fellow workers that rings just as true today as it did then. Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger, Joe Glazer, the Almanac Singers, and more chronicle the history of the American labor movement in stirring song.

[Notes]
Joe Glazer's (1918–2006) musical efforts on behalf of workers and union struggles earned him the nickname "Labor's Troubadour." In 1970, he founded Collector Records, primarily to produce records supportive of the struggles of working men and women. The majority of the songs on this recording were originally collected from miners by the preeminent folklorist of the coal mines, George Korson, to whom this recording is dedicated. The first half of the recording was made in 1962, with Charlie Byrd playing lead guitar. The second half was recorded before a live audience at the 1964 United Mine Workers of America Convention, held in Miami, Florida.

"Come all you jolly fellows and listen to my song. It's all about the shantyboys and how they get along." [The Lumber Camp Song] In this collection of Songs for Woodworkers Joe Glazer definitely captures the essence of the jolly spirit of the men and women that often worked in rather harsh and dangerous conditions. In celebration of the International Woodworkers of America's 40th anniversary, this album pays tribute to one of America's greatest unions with songs such as "Talking IWA" and "The Lumberman's Alphabet."

[Notes]
What's a Wobbly? Legend has it that a Chinese cook in a railroad gang while proudly announcing that he was a member of the IWW (Industrial Workers of the World—a union formed to organize all workers) was heard to say he was a member of the "I-Wobbly-Wobbly." Despite their humorous nickname, the members of IWW experienced tremendous struggles which were often documented through song. Starting as a one-paged leaflet headed by the words: ""Sing and fight! Right was the tyrant king who said: 'Beware of a movement that sings’" the IWW’s Little Red Song Book soon grew to include dozens of songs including Ralph Chaplin’s "Solidarity Forever." As a special treat, this album also includes excerpts from Chaplin’s speech at a woodworker's convention in 1960.
