Producer: Jon Pankake, Photographer: Robert Frank, Designer: Carol Hardy, Recorders: Moses Asch, Peter Bartok and Mike Seeger
[Notes]
Moses Asch had a unique method of recording artists back in the '40s and '50s. Someone like Woody Guthrie, for instance, would just drop by Folkways when he had an idea and record. Asch might pay him five dollars for the session, and in this way he accumulated a vault full of material. Perhaps this explains the incredible fact that the New Lost City Ramblers recorded 12 albums between 1958-1962. The Early Years (1958-1962) collects 26 songs, over 70 minutes of music, from these dozen discs, creating an excellent document of the band's years with Tom Paley. John Cohen, and Mike Seeger formed the New Lost City Ramblers in 1958 with the idea of playing old-time music recorded between the late '20s and 1940. While it has often been stated that the trio intended to copy -- phrase for phrase, lick for lick -- the old 78s, Jon Pankake points out in the liner notes that this wasn't the case. Instead, the New Lost City Ramblers wanted to insert the same vim and vigor into "The Battleship of Maine" and "Fly Around My Pretty Little Miss" as the original players. What stands out now, some 60 years after these recordings, is the band's versatility. Whether cutting loose on an instrumental like "Colored Aristocracy" or singing tight harmony on "Brown's Ferry Blues," the three comrades form a tight unit. While the arrangements never outgrow the number of persons in the band, each player's ability to play multiple instruments lends diversity to the material. The Early Years (1958-1962) offers a very good introduction to an innovative and influential band. -- AllMusic Review by Ronnie D. Lankford, Jr.

[Notes]
On this record, the New Lost City Ramblers perform traditional children's songs from the Appalachian Mountains, characterized by the fiddle, the banjo, and a strong narrative. As John Cohen writes in the liner notes, there are "some songs with common sense and common nonsense...songs to listen to, songs you can sing to others. Some of these songs I heard when I was a kid—and some of them I wish I had heard then." Favorites include "Cotton Eyed Joe," "Barbara Allen," and "Hop High Ladies."

[Notes]
From Odetta considered one of the most influential artists of the 20th Century to Jean Ritchie the mother of Appalachian folk music, responsible for exposing us to a treasure trove of material passed down from her ancestors that have since become staples of the world-wide folk scene. Carolyn Hester invited Bob Dylan to play harmonica on her first Columbia record which led to him signing with the label while Barbara Dane raised the bar for all singers when she burst onto the scene in the early 1950’s and a little lady from the Southern Appalachians named Etta Baker set the standard for folk guitarists everywhere

Guitar, banjo, autoharp and dulcimer weave a delicate majesty on a great selection of traditional material. This stunning collection, recorded in London in 1964 by Bill Leader, is a powerful example of their musical accuity and has been an influence on many younger performers. [Notes]
Although Barbara Dane is chiefly thought of these days as a blues singer (she even recorded an album with Lightnin' Hopkins, 1964's Sometimes I Believe She Loves Me, where she more than holds her own with the Texas bluesman), she came to the blues through the folk door, and this wonderful set, recorded in 1959 at the Ash Grove in Los Angeles, shows that she understood the feel and emotional tone of the blues even before she officially turned to it. Featuring her husky, expressive voice and solid acoustic guitar playing, with occasional help from Tom Paley (of the New Lost City Ramblers) on second guitar or banjo, these 15 tracks have a depth and immediacy frequently lacking in similar collections from other urban folk singers of the so-called Folk Revival. Where other singers of the day might present songs like "When I Was a Young Girl," "Nine Hundred Miles" (or "Five Hundred Miles" or however many miles you want to make it) or Woody Guthrie's "Ramblin'" as brittle, stylized and often sanitized facsimiles, Dane's amazingly soulful singing personalizes them, and in her hands these familiar songs seem both freshly born and truly lived. Tradition Records released the original LP, and the sequence has been issued a few times since, most recently in 1997. It remains a little known high point of the Folk Revival, the debut album of a powerful and graceful singer. -- AllMusic Review by Steve Leggett

[Notes]
Longtime Folkways recording artists The New Lost City Ramblers perform 17 period songs about liquor, bootlegging, and Prohibition (1917–1933) in the traditional style of southern mountain string bands. As Rambler member Mike Seeger observes in the liner notes, many of the songs appear to have been written by people who knew drink well and were familiar with its effects. Several of the songs consist of new lyrics commemorating the virtues or evils of alcohol set to familiar melodies of the time. Rambler member John Cohen also contributed to the liner notes, which include an informal history of prohibition in America as well as song lyrics and photos.

[Notes]
In the traditional string band style, longtime Folkways recording artists The New Lost City Ramblers offer up 18 topical songs written by country singers during the dark days of the Great Depression. Many of the songs are from commercial recordings, mostly from the South, and field recordings made during the Farm Resettlement Program; they illustrate the economic and social depression that affected this area, often long after prosperity began to return to American's urban centers. Band members Tom Paley, John Cohen, and Mike Seeger contributed to the liner notes, which contain background information on the Great Depression as well as song lyrics.
