[Notes]
Originally intended as a teaching aid for senior high school social studies and covering a broad scope of civic, government, economic, citizenship and immigration issues, this compilation provides a provocative mid-century impression of America culled from witnesses to the first half of the twentieth century. We are treated to songs from Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger and Malvina Reynolds; speeches from Theodore Roosevelt, Dwight Eisenhower, Martin Luther King, Jr. and Williams Jennings Bryan; so-called "brag talk" by cowboys; and pronouncement of an oath of loyalty by Chief John Oberly of the "Osage Tribe of Indians" affirming that he will not conspire with any political parties to overthrow the US government.

[Notes]
This 1954 release documents the musicality that surrounds us in everyday life―calls and whistles, a toddler's speech, a jump rope rhyme, an auctioneer selling vegetables, and much more. Tony Schwartz captures such sounds on a portable recorder as he goes about his day. Schwartz includes commentary between tracks to create an awareness of the musical nuances in each recording. Liner notes include an introduction by Schwartz and descriptions of the various sounds on each track.

[Notes]
From the streets of New York City comes a medley of musical styles that represents the cultural and musical diversity of the Big Apple. Recorded between the spring of 1950 and fall of 1957 by famed sound archivist Tony Schwartz, Music in the Streets attests to the view that music is a matter of "necessity inclination". The selections here include not only that of street performers and musicians but also of street festivals, parades, and religious groups. Liner notes include photographs of street musicians in New York City, an introduction by Schwartz, and track notes.
