[Notes]
To evade the religious prohibition against dancing in certain American communities, young people in the 19th century devised an ingenious solution?they adapted children’s games, which were permitted. The result was so-called play parties. Participants sang creative songs to cue movements, and the events were great “mixers.” The only element lacking was instrumental music. On this recording, Pete Seeger and his young daughter Mika are joined by Rev. Larry Eisenberg in the singing of traditional play party songs. The songs come primarily from the collections of Lynn and Katherine Rohrbough. In accordance with traditional practice, the play parties are sung without accompaniment, save for handclapping. The liner notes, written by Pete Seeger, outline the history, development, and characteristics of play parties, and provide the lyric.

Originally issued as a 10-inch album in 1955, Goofing-Off Suite finds Pete Seeger playing a mix of classical, popular, and folk music. Side 1 of the recording includes five classical music themes adapted by Seeger for banjo. In the liner notes, Seeger urges musicians to swipe music from different genres to break down musical barriers and expand musical horizons. Side 2 is Seeger playing a more familiar repertoire of traditional folk music on banjo, guitar, and chalil (flute) ("Sally My Dear"). The vinyl reissue of Goofing-Off Suite includes Pete Seeger's liner notes and is part of Folkways Records' 70th anniversary celebration series, revisiting some of the most iconic and influential albums released on the record label. We are offering the vinyl reissue of American Banjo: Tunes and Songs in Scruggs Style, Dock Boggs: Legendary Singer and Banjo Player, and Pete Seeger Goofing-Off Suite as a Vinyl Bundle with Bonus Folkways Slipmat.

The enthusiasm and informality of summer camp songs are captured by a group of six- to eleven- year-old children, whose performance is directed by iconic folksinger Pete Seeger (1919–2014). Seeger also arranged the songs, and with his banjo further enlivens the proceedings. In addition, folksinger/banjoist Erik Darling (1933–2008), perhaps best known for his recording (as leader of the Rooftop Singers) of the hit single "Walk Right In" in 1963, performs five camp songs as solo numbers. The liner notes provide the lyrics of the songs, enabling listeners to join in the fun.

[Notes]
In 1967, Pete Seeger was the guest speaker for a two-hour program at the Ford Hall Forum in Boston, MA, on the topic "Music and Social Justice." Seeger's remarks—interwoven with 35 illustrative songs, mostly excerpts—reveal a widely read and analytical side. His commentary notes both the positive and negative role that songs have played in issues of race, the labor movement, and social justice. The second half of the program is devoted to Q&A between Seeger and the audience. The ongoing Vietnam War is prominent in this segment; included is discussion about Seeger's interactions with TV officials over their censorship of his hard-hitting anti-Vietnam War song, "Waist Deep in the Big Muddy," which he sings in its entirety. An extended enthusiastic round of applause (almost certainly accompanying a standing ovation) concludes the event. Liner notes provide background, as well as a transcript of the program.

You've Been a Friend to Me is the first collection featuring Sonya's singing, and it reveals the full arc of her musical life through collaborations with her aunt Peggy Seeger, uncle Pete Seeger, Elizabeth Mitchell, Daniel Littleton, and the folk-fusion group Last Forever. While shaped by the roots of her family tree, the radiating and clear sound of Sonya's voice is distinctly her own.

The Spanish Civil War (1936–1939) was initially an armed conflict between a democratically elected government and a revolt by far right-wing Spanish military officers led by Francisco Franco, who were supported by the fascist governments of Italy and Nazi Germany. Anti-fascist supporters flocked to Spain to help the beleaguered government, including over 3,000 American volunteers who formed the Lincoln Battalion of the International Brigades. Originally recorded in the 1940s, this album contains songs in English and Spanish by folk balladeer Pete Seeger, Tom Glazer, and Bess and Butch Hawes and in German by the anti-fascist singer Ernst Busch. The recording was re-released in 1961. Extensive liner notes include a history of the conflict and song lyrics.

Pete Seeger (banjo)
[Notes]
Pete Seeger (1919–2014) was a national treasure who had a long and exceptional career as a folk singer and social activist. Overall, he appears on (or is otherwise associated with) an astonishing total of 123 Smithsonian Folkways recordings. In 1948, Seeger wrote a manual entitled How to Play the 5-String Banjo (originally self-published, the third edition was reprinted in 2013). Then, in 1954, Seeger recorded an instructional album on playing a 5-string banjo. The manual and the recording have influenced aspiring banjo players for generations. On the album Seeger explains and provides examples of basic tunings, strums, and techniques such as "hammering on" and "pulling off" and other aspects of playing. He covers the basics of a variety of styles, including "frailing," 3-finger, blues, jazz, Spanish flamenco, and Latin American rumba styles.

[Notes]
Originally intended as a teaching aid for senior high school social studies and covering a broad scope of civic, government, economic, citizenship and immigration issues, this compilation provides a provocative mid-century impression of America culled from witnesses to the first half of the twentieth century. We are treated to songs from Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger and Malvina Reynolds; speeches from Theodore Roosevelt, Dwight Eisenhower, Martin Luther King, Jr. and Williams Jennings Bryan; so-called "brag talk" by cowboys; and pronouncement of an oath of loyalty by Chief John Oberly of the "Osage Tribe of Indians" affirming that he will not conspire with any political parties to overthrow the US government.
