He is ably assisted by nine bluegrass musicians, including J.D. Crowe (banjo), Vassar Clements (fiddle), and Josh Graves (dobro). Red produced the recording. Like his father, Harley Allen is an exponent of the "high lonesome sound," a highly regarded vocal technique in mountain music, whether traditional or bluegrass. Harley explains his approach to bluegrass music in the following way: "Even though my brothers and I have experimented with the boundaries of bluegrass music, I wanted my first solo effort to be fairly straight 'grass.' I feel this album is."

[Notes]
Solid straight-ahead bluegrass from a group comprised of masters both old and young. For old, we have the legendary Bill Emerson, banjo virtuoso and charter member of the proto-newgrass Country Gentleman; for young, we have the very fine singer and guitarist Mark Newton, as well as the equally fine mandolinist Emory Lester and bassist Bob Goff. Newton has a remarkably flexible voice -- compare his full-throated mountain roar on "Long Gone Baby" (a Neil Diamond song, believe it or not) to the gentler, higher-pitched tones he brings to bear on Larry McPeak's "The Vow." There are two Jimmy Martin covers, one a typical novelty tune ("Home Run Man") and the other a bitter kiss-off ("Don't Cry to Me"); the latter finds Emory Lester cross-picking a la Jesse McReynolds. The group's sound is strictly traditional, but there's nothing stuffy or academic about it. Great songs, tight harmonies, and virtuosic playing make this disc a delight from beginning to end. - AllMusic Review by Rick Anderson

[Notes]
Jean Ritchie is a national treasure, one of America's finest and best known singers of traditional American folksongs. She grew up in Viper, Kentucky, and is part of a large family, the famous "Singing Ritchies of Kentucky."Ritchie noted that this recording could have been subtitled, "Schoolyard Songs and Games Recollected from My Childhood in Viper, Kentucky." It was her first recording devoted exclusively to childre's songs. She accompanies herself on the guitar and Appalachian dulcimer, the latter being the instrument for which she is best known. Jean followed this 1957 recording with a second recording of children's songs for Folkways 11 years later (Marching Across The Green Grass and Other American Children's Game Songs—FW07702). The liner notes are written by preeminent folklorist Kenneth Goldstein, who provides background information, instructions for playing each game, and each song's lyrics. [Notes]
The story is basically this: a soldier is dying, evidently of venereal disease he contracted from a young woman, and he requests a funeral. Hear how this story has been spun over centuries into a whole collection of similarly themed songs, the earliest possibly dating to 1790. In this recording we are essentially witnessing the evolution of the Anglo-Saxon ballad tradition.
