[Notes]
The boundaries between jazz and popular music were never as blurry as in the 1920s, when jazz bands played pop songs and dance bands performed jazz tunes. This recording celebrates this mixture and mutual influence—and as the original liner notes exhort, "Climb aboard with a hey nonny-nonny and a hot cha-cha!"

[Notes]
The oldest English-language religious music in oral tradition in North America, the lined-out, congregational hymnody of the Old Regular Baptists, is heard in the heart of the coal-mining country of the Southern Appalachian Mountains. This music of worship once was the common way of singing sacred song in the American Colonies. In this rare and beautiful music lies the roots of the high, lonesome mountain sound of elaborate melodic turns and graces. A descriptive booklet provides perspectives on the people, their beliefs and practices, their history and theology, and their music.

Little Folkies is a multi-award winning family folk music class for parents and kids ages 0-5. The Little Folkies music classes are pure fun and enjoyable for both kids and parents! Our talented teachers engage kids and adults with finger play, hand movement, singing, dancing, and instrument jamming.
Every child is musical, in fact we are all music at the core. Here at Little Folkies we encourage everyone to sing with voice they have. You do not need to be a trained musician to make good music. All you need is your voice, hands and feet, rhythm and some good songs to sing. Your child will love listening to you singing the melodies, tapping the beat and doing the movements; and soon enough they’ll be singing and moving along themselves!

[Notes]
Founder of Arhoolie Records Chris Strachwitz recorded music wherever he found it: in coffee houses, music clubs, living rooms, festival stages, and recording studios. To celebrate Arhoolie’s 50th anniversary, Strachwitz released a box set of recordings he made during his early years in the record business. Of the 72 tracks of music in the set, spread over 4 CDs, over half (38) had previously been unreleased by Arhoolie. The music is a true representation of Strachwitz's eclectic musical interests and span the spectrum from raw country blues and folk to gospel and free-form jazz. This anniversary collection includes versions of "Ball and Chain" and "Hound Dog" by Big Mama Thornton, "Tom Moore's Farm" by Lightnin’Hopkins, "I Feel Like I'm Fixin' to Die Rag" by Country Joe McDonald and the Fish, "Shake ʼEm On Down" by Mississippi Fred McDowell, "Deportee" by Barbara Dane, "Highway 49" by Big Joe Williams, and "Changed the Lock on My Door" by Mance Lipscomb, Lonnie Johnson, Brownie McGhee, and Sonny Terry. The box set captures a time and provides a template that Arhoolie would follow for 50 years in presenting and preserving Americana roots music.

[Notes]
On June 6, 1964, 16 marching bands came together in Lamberville, New Jersey, to mark the centennial of two local volunteer fire companies with a pageant that showcased the region’s history and fire equipment. Drum and bugle corps performed energetic marches, with high school bands and pipers also contributing to the music of the day. The low chugging of passing fire equipment and incidental sounds capture the atmosphere of the celebration. While a recording of overlapping music and sounds may seem unlikely, it evokes the informal and joyous spirit of a festival.

[Notes]
Dubbed "The Mayor of MacDougal Street," Dave Van Ronk (1936–2002) was an iconoclastic folksinger and an influential figure in the American folk music revival of the 1960s. Because of his interest in African American folk music and blues, and his gift (or curse) of a gravelly baritone voice, Van Ronk was often criticized for his approach to his musical repertoire. His rejoinder was that he reserved the right to sing songs in the style that he deemed to be "the right way." This 1959 Folkways recording, his first on any label, is a collection of 19th- and early 20th-century traditional folk and blues songs that persuasively illustrates his stance. The vinyl reissue includes a liner notes booklet with the song lyrics and is part of the Smithsonian Folkways Vinyl Reissue Series, revisiting some of the most iconic and influential albums released on the record label.

[Notes]
Highway Prayers, the major-label studio debut from Billy Strings, is a coming out party for the bluegrass wunderkind. Not that Strings necessarily needs an introduction. Over years of touring punctuated by a handful of acclaimed records on the legendary Americana imprint Rounder, the Michigan native has developed a quicksilver style that has earned him widespread appeal and industry recognition: Home, his second record, won the Grammy for Best Bluegrass Album in 2021, right around the time his fleet flat-picking found an enthusiastic reception among jam band freaks. Without ever abandoning his roots in traditional bluegrass, Strings ventured into other musical styles, demonstrating his facility with rock, metal, and blues, sounding equally at ease with bluegrass legends Béla Fleck and David Grisman as he is with rapper Post Malone or jam titans Phish.

[Notes]
This spoken-word and music album was produced by musician/educator Bilal Abdurahman with a fourfold purpose: to encourage children to think and respond more readily to creative play activities through music and body movements; to make children aware of the many interesting sounds in their daily environment; to develop rhythmic coordination and better motor control; and to introduce unfamiliar sounds and musical instruments as a play and learning activity. Abdurahman and his collaborators—including daughters Rahkiah and Zainab— introduce listeners to everyday sounds and rhythms using bells, hammers and saws, electric fans, and typewriters! The liner notes include a transcript of the recording.

[Notes]
Growing up in Los Angeles, Jerron Paxton would sit with an ear by the radio, eagerly absorbing the nuances and history of Black American traditional music that connect him to his ancestral roots in the South. A songwriter, inheritor of tradition, and a walking, talking jukebox, Paxton approaches his craft with equal part wit and reverence, with a knack for leg-pulling and cracking wise. Things Done Changed is an album of original songs that sound beamed in from nearly a century ago, when jazz and blues were performed as a means of both personal and cultural survival. Lick by lick, Paxton builds a bridge between generations gone and generations to come, singing the heartaches and joys of the past and present.

The a cappella performance of "Johnny Macaroon" by David Massengill, Bob McGrath's cautionary tale of "Herpes," and Sheldon Biber's poem "It Was One of Those Mornings" are also featured. [Notes]
Old-time musician Frank Bode sings and plays guitar on this 1984 album of traditional American rural music. He is joined on the recording by banjo picker Paul Brown and legendary fiddler Tommy Jarrell, who sadly passed away just four months later. From murder ballads to songs of moonshiner tales to the blues, this album attests to the richness of a rural tradition passed down from generation to generation. Liner notes include song lyrics and an introduction to each track, including its origins and how it came into the perfomers' lives.

[Notes]
From the first notes of symbiont, the radical new collaborative album and document of Black and Indigenous futurism from Jake Blount and Mali Obomsawin, the listener is met with rising tidewaters, massive droughts, and the appearance of an iconoclastic uprising amidst the world’s indifference. Questions of future or present tense swirl around the music as the duo unspools the intertwined threads of racial and climate justice. Amid rumbling synthesizer drones, the thrum of banjo, and the thwack of drum machines, a whisper of truth can be heard: this crisis has been unfolding for centuries.

"What you will hear on this recording is a cry of a people for justice and human dignity. You don't know what freedom is unless you've experienced the chains from which to break free." The poems and music presented on this album were written and compiled by African-American inmates and ex-inmates of three prisons in the New York system—Attica, Rikers Island, and the Tombs. Their work speaks not only of the conditions faced in prison but to the broader African American experience outside prison walls where "Down went the junkie with the monkey on his back, the white world laughed because the junkie was Black."

[Notes]
Tom Waits’ Glitter and Doom Live doesn't fall into the various traps that many other concert recordings do, though it does have its problems. This double-disc set marks his third live effort in his nearly 40-year career, each one summing up his career to the point of its release. The first, Nighthawks at the Diner, issued in 1975 on Asylum, is regarded by many as one of the greatest live albums of all time. Big Time, released during his tenure at Island in 1986, is hotly debated in fan circles. It is likely that Glitter and Doom Live will be too, but for different reasons. The musical performances here were culled from Waits’ historic sold-out tour of the U.S. and Europe. He compiled and sequenced the tracks himself, intending to make them sound like a single show. The material leans, understandably, on his recordings with the Anti label. There are stellar performances here, of "Get Behind the Mule" from The Mule Variations, "Trampled Rose" from Real Gone, and a haunting version of Leadbelly’s "Fannin Street" from Orphans: Brawlers, Bawlers & Bastards, to mention just three of the 17 cuts included on disc one. But he also goes back to his Island albums with a new approach to the material. For instance, there are completely re-visioned readings of "Lucky Day" and "I’ll Shoot the Moon" from 1993’s Black Rider, and a killer -- though equally revamped -- version of "Singapore" from 1985’s Rain Dogs. Musically, the performances are flawless, as is the sound on this set. The killer stage band includes Vincent Henry on woodwinds and harmonica, guitarist Omar Torres, Patrick Warren on piano and keyboards, Casey Waits on drums/percussion, and Seth Ford Young on bass. There is also a guest appearance by Sullivan Waits on sax and clarinet; Tom plays piano and guitar. Waits decided to ax most of the stage banter from disc one. This is problematic because it is as much part and parcel of his show as the music is. Without it, the music as a whole feels more like just a random but solid collection of live tracks, rather than Waits' intended purpose of a single-show experience. The other problem is disc two, a bonus in this deluxe package comprised of a single 35-plus-minute track called "Tom's Tales," which splices stories and dialogue, reminiscences and spontaneous comedy. These routines work brilliantly and seamlessly in the context of his show. If one goes back to Nighthawks at the Diner or Big Time, evidence is ample. Without a song coming after these wildly various ruminations, they feel strangely disembodied and one can only hear it once or twice before the material itself feels old. Conversely, then, the musical disc feels incomplete, too. This one gets its grade strictly on the quality of the music. While the wide-spine digipack is beautiful, the project as a whole falls short, though some hardcore Waits fans will, as is customary, ardently disagree. -- Thom Jurek

[Notes]
While recording in the South in the early 1960s, producer, writer, and music historian Samuel Charters was inspired not only by the sound of Furry Lewis's guitar, but by the patterns of movement in his hands and fingers as he played. Thus Charters decided to make a film that would document aspects of the blues that couldn’t be put on a phonograph record. In the sweltering summer of 1962, Charters journeyed through St. Louis, Memphis, Louisiana, and South Carolina to shoot the film The Blues and record this soundtrack. Artists featured in addition to Lewis are J.D. Short, Baby Tate, and Sleepy John Estes. Liner notes include details of the making of the film and biographies of the artists.

[Notes]
Beneath the steel strings and steely demeanor exemplifying the spirit of bluegrass lies the heart of a wanderer: the heartbroken rambler looking for the next big break and the next story to tell. The Po' Rambin' Boys' Wanderers Like Me is a quintessential bluegrass record, full of melodies that burst with energy and emotion and music driven by melancholy but refusing to succumb to it. They confront their losses with original songs that resonate poignantly across the hills and hollers where bluegrass was born. For The Po’ Ramblin’ Boys wandering is anything but aimless: they ramble not to escape the past but to experience the future.

[Notes]
The Promised Land was released during a period when the public became aware of American Indian grievances through a series of protest actions. In 1978, for example, a group of American Indians undertook "The Longest Walk" to educate people about legislation threatening tribal sovereignty and rights; the five-month spiritual walk from California to Washington, D.C., succeeded in garnering wide support―and in blocking the legislation. The opening track honors Walk participants. Other tracks include "The Day Columbus Got Lost" and "Proud to Belong to the Indian Nation." Liner notes provide a background on Native beliefs as well as detailed descriptions of songs, newspaper articles, and quotes from tribal chiefs, Nietzsche, and Bob Dylan.

Laura Fishleder (guitar) Andy Cahan (banjo/vocals) Lisa Ornstein (fiddle)
Producer: Kerry Blech, Notes: Andy Cahan, Engineer: Chuck Ruby, Designer: Ronald Clyne
[Notes]
Musicians Andy Cahan on banjo, Laura Fishleder on guitar, and Lisa Ornstein on fiddle collaborate to offer a fine collection of almost entirely instrumental interpretations of old-time music. The performers present music rooted primarily in rural areas across the United States. One track features vocals: "Elkhorn Ridge," sung by Cahan. Interestingly, in addition to the well-known traditional folk song "Polly Put the Kettle On," a similarly titled track, “Molly Put the Kettle On," is also included. However, as Cahan makes clear in the liner notes, the two songs "have nothing to do with [each other]." The liner notes from this 1978 recording provide brief descriptions of the origins of each of the tracks and short biographies of the three musicians.

Cover Artwork: Joe Weitz
[Notes]
Ruth Rubin (1906–2000), a preeminent authority on Yiddish folk song, was successful as an author, concert singer, and folk song collector, with four albums in the Folkways catalogue. Although she recorded Hebrew songs also, most often she sang in Yiddish, the primary secular language formerly spoken by the Jews of Eastern Europe. On this recording, she presents a sampling of Yiddish songs as well as songs in Hebrew from early Jewish pioneers in Palestine and the period when the modern State of Israel was being established. Liner notes provide information about each song, as well as the lyrics in Yiddish or Hebrew, with English translation.

[Notes]
"The music presented in this album is typical of rural Guatemala. Most of the inhabitants of this area are Indians of Mayan descent, but almost everywhere in the Guatemalan countryside one can also find Ladinos: persons, of whatever descent, who speak Spanish in their homes and have adopted the Ladino way of life, which is mostly Spanish. It is not completely Spanish, however, because both the cultures of rural Guatemala are the result of the confrontation over several centuries of two very different civilizations, the indigenous Mayan, and the Western, introduced by the Spanish in the 16th century. Both cultures have borrowed traits from the other, and this is nowhere more evident than in their music, which is a mixture of European, Indian, and perhaps also African elements..." Jacques Jangoux

[Notes]
Performed by Langston Hughes, Ossie Davis, Jean Brannon, W.E.B. DuBois, and Pete Seeger, this collection of spoken word, oral history, speech and song represents a comprehensive sociopolitical history of black America. Beginning with America's rediscovery in 1492 and Columbus's supposedly black pilot, Pedro Alonso Niño, the collection covers the colonial period, the slave experience, the Civil war, notable African-American women, nineteenth-century black intellectuals, the Jim Crow years and the struggle for civil rights, ending with the late Martin Luther King Jr.
