Songs played a large role in the movement to close the racial divide in America during the 1960s, and prayers, chants, sermons, and shouts were also fundamental to this task. This album features clips of these cries for freedom heard across the southern states of Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi and the District of Columbia. At voter registration rallies, in churches, at conferences or during mass meetings these words changed lives.

The 24 selections included in the 1951 compilation "Negro Folk Music of Africa and America" provide a sample of musical styles from Africa, and the African diaspora in South America, the Caribbean, and the Southern United States. This anthology demonstrates the continuation of African musical traditions into The New World. According to producer Harold Courlander, "in some parts of the Americas it is possible to find old African songs and dances that are still know' in almost identical form in local African communities." The album includes songs such as "Ingane Kamalume" from South Africa, "Jesha Cult Song" from Brazil, and "Didn't You Hear My Lord When He Called?" from Alabama, USA. In addition, a 6-page booklet of liner notes by Harold Courlander features a brief description of African music and its influence in other regions and detailed song descriptions.

When programming them, we found it appropriate to divide them as we did. The Kutchin (also known as Gwich'in) Indians live across Central and Eastern Alaska, the Yukon, and the Northwest Territories. Their vocal music represents the more traditional way of experiencing music―unaccompanied singing. Their instrumental music, especially played on the fiddle, reflects the influence of explorers, traders, and missionaries on musical tastes. The Gwich’in adopted not only the music that whites introduced but jigs, reels, and square dances. There are several instances as well of Gwich’in adapting Native dance forms to this Western style of music.

Initially released in 1965, Who's That Knocking? is the first album by Hazel Dickens and Alice Gerrard. With this trailblazing record, Hazel and Alice shattered the glass ceiling of male-dominated bluegrass, which had typically relegated women to minor musical roles at best. Hazel and Alice’s hard-edged, soulful harmonies were firmly rooted in the older music traditions of the rural South. Their steadfast devotion to their powerful, driving style inspired generations of women in bluegrass, country music, and even punk. They are accompanied on this album by Chubby Wise, arguably the architect of bluegrass fiddling; David Grisman, whose mandolin improvisations changed the landscape of acoustic music; and Lamar Grier, who played banjo as a member of Bill Monroe’s Blue Grass Boys in the 1960s. Unavailable on vinyl for decades, Who's That Knocking? was remastered in 2021 by its original producer Peter K. Siegel, and has been reissued with its original artwork and liner notes.

This collection of old-time social and instrumental string-band music spotlights instrumental prowess. Old-time music features playing styles that pre-date bluegrass, emerging from the string band tradition stretching back to the early years of United States history. Both African-American and Anglo-American ingredients are at its core, the banjo having African origins, the fiddle European. Some of the most revered sources of old-time roots music—Dock Boggs, Roscoe Holcomb, Wade Ward, Tommy Jarrell, and more—are heard playing in their original styles. The Grateful Dead's cover of "Don't Let Your Deal Go Down" and Bob Dylan's rendition of Clarence Ashley's "Little Sadie" clearly attest to the continuing influence of these songs. "On February 13, 1960 approximately 124 students from American Baptist Theological Seminary, Fisk University, and Tennessee A & I State University staged their first sit-in demonstrations at three stores in the Nashville downtown area." Inspired by the courageous acts of these students, Guy Carawan compiled this collection of songs which chronicles the history of the Tennessee sit-ins, peaceful protests in reaction to the unfair and discriminatory practices of storeowners in Nashville.
