Skaggs & Rice is a lovely duet album between Ricky Skaggs and Tony Rice. The two musicians run through a number of bluegrass classics, performing them in a spare, simple old-timey style, backed only by their guitar and mandolin. Not only are the performances breathtaking, but so are the song selections -- including Bill Monroe classics like "Mansions for Me" and "Tennessee Blues" as well as other standards like "Talk About Suffering" and "Have You Someone (In Heaven Awaiting)."

Collectively known as the New Lost City Ramblers, Mike Seeger, John Cohen, and Tom Paley were pioneers in the revival of Southern mountain music during the folk music revival of the late 1950s and early 1960s. They brought the sounds of genuine old-time string band music and early bluegrass to eager city and college audiences who had grown disillusioned with the commercial pap of the folk boom. This set features two previously released CDs of the Ramblers classic Folkways recordings: The Early Years, 1958-1962 with the original trio, and Out Standing in Their Field: Volume II, 1963-1973, with Tracy Schwarz replacing Tom Paley. A newly compiled third disc,Where Do You Come From? Where Do You Go? celebrates the band's 50th anniversary in 2009, presenting more choice Ramblers selections along with their field recordings of the traditional Southern musicians who inspired them including: Dock Boggs, Roscoe Holcomb, Tom Ashley, Maybelle Carter, Elizabeth Cotten, Eck Robertson, Cousin Emmy, Reverend Gary Davis, Kilby Snow, Dillard Chandler, Dellie Norton, and the Balfa Brothers. 81 tracks, over 3 ½ hours of music, 88-page booklet over 3 CDs. Traditional Irish musician Billy McComiskey is joined in this performance by Myron Bretholz, Josh Dukes, Angela Fee, Catriona Fee, Mikey McComiskey and Patrick McComiskey.

Billy McComiskey is one of the nation's leading players of Irish traditional music. He has won the All-Ireland championship on the button accordion, and is a veteran of bands such as the Irish Tradition, the Green Fields of America, and Trian, He is a native of Brooklyn, New York, and learned to play from Sean McGlynn, a master and proponent of the East Galway style that now characterizes the playing of many of the country's finest Irish accordion players. Billy McComiskey earned a 2016 National Heritage Fellowship Award from the National Endowment for the Arts.

This four-disc box set from JSP Records collects tracks from the earliest years of bluegrass music, and in a rather curious sequencing decision, runs them backwards from the first disc, which includes the latest selections from the 1950s, to the fourth, which is made up of what are essentially high-octane string band tracks from the early '30s. Arranged this way, it neither functions effectively as a history or as an overview of early bluegrass, but that may well be secondary, since it does put about 90 hard to find 78s in one place, which no doubt will be its main attraction to bluegrass scholars and collectors. It is particularly interesting to hear the selections from Byron Parker & His Mountaineers, which all feature DeWitt "Snuffy" Jenkins on five-string banjo. Jenkins' three-finger picking style clearly prefigures the later work of banjo great Earl Scruggs, whose lightning three-finger runs have become the standard -- if not the very backbone -- of modern bluegrass. Also of interest here is the first version of "Orange Blossom Special," recorded by the Rouse Brothers in New York City in 1939. The song was actually written by the fiddler Ervin Rouse, and this simple early rendition is quite striking, particularly when you stop and ponder how many thousands of times the song has been recorded and performed since. Serious fans of bluegrass will find this box set useful and instructive, but casual listeners will no doubt find it to be about three discs too long. -- Review by Steve Leggett

A concert by bagpiper and flutist Carlos Nunez. Galicians trace their ancestry not only to Iberians but also to Celtic peoples, and their musical traditions reflect a connection to Ireland, Scotland, and Brittany. This concert features a special emphasis on the music collected by Alan Lomax in Galicia in the 1950s, which are part of the AFC archives, and which have inspired numerous musicians including Miles Davis. Nunez has visited AFC several times to research this important collection.

Speaker Biography: Carlos Nunez is a world-famous bagpiper and flutist from Galicia in Spain. Nunez is a traditional bagpiper as well as a classically-trained flute and recorder virtuoso. He has played with the Chieftains, Ry Cooder, Altan, Sinead O'Connor, Hector Zazou, Philip Pickett, and Tamiya Terashima, to name only a few. He has also performed with symphony orchestras and classical ensembles, and has appeared on prestigious stages the world over.

BeauSoleil Quartet: Cajun Music from Louisiana

The BeauSoleil Quartet presents a concert of lively and soulful Louisiana Cajun music. The quartet includes Michael Doucet on fiddle, accordion and vocals, David Doucet on guitar and vocals, Mitchell Reed on fiddle and bass, and Billy Ware on percussion.

Speaker Biography: For four decades the BeauSoleil Quartet has taken traditional ingredients -- waltzes, two-steps, soulful Cajun French lyrics, hot fiddle licks and irresistible accordion -- and spiced them up with eclectic percussion, acoustic guitar in both finger-picked and flat-picked styles and an open and creative attitude toward the music. BeauSoleil was the first Cajun band to win a Grammy Award (1998) and added a second in 2008. In 2011 the quartet was inducted into the Louisiana Music Hall of Fame.

In 1973, Paredon Records gave Barbara Dane the opportunity to speak about the struggles of the American working class on I Hate The Capitalist System. She offers social commentary on the Ludlow Massacre of 1914 and the disadvantages of capitalism to the struggle in Vietnam. She sings these 14 political ballads in a traditional folk style, accompanying herself on guitar. Liner notes include an opening essay by Irwin Silver about Kane and the inspiration for her work, lyrics and explanation for each song.

Their versatility has led them to perform at the Smithsonian Folklife Festival, the International Accordion Festival, the Kennedy Center, the Governor of Texas Ball, and many major festivals overseas in countries such as Germany, Holland and Spain. Los Texmaniacs is a conjunto band created by Max Baca in 1997. Baca wanted to create a band that incorporated elements from genres such as rock and roll and jazz while still honoring the roots of conjunto tejano.

Bun Wright's Fiddle Band at FDR's Little White House

From the Roosevelt's Little White House Historic Site: FDR built the Little White House in 1932 while governor of New York, prior to being inaugurated as president in 1933. He first came to Warm Springs in 1924 hoping to find a cure for the infantile paralysis (polio) that had struck him in 1921. Swimming in the 88-degree, buoyant spring waters brought him no miracle cure, but it did bring improvement. During FDR’s presidency and the Great Depression, he developed many New Deal Programs (such as the Rural Electrification Administration) based upon his experiences in this small town.While posing for a portrait on April 12, 1945, FDR suffered a stroke and died a short while later. Today, the “Unfinished Portrait” is featured in a museum that showcases many exhibits, including FDR’s 1938 Ford convertible with hand controls, his Fireside Chats playing over a 1930s radio, his stagecoach and a theater. Visitors can tour FDR’s home, which has been carefully preserved very much as he left it, the servants and guest quarters, and the nearby pools complex that first brought the future president to Warm Springs. Selected as a "Readers Choice" site in Georgia Magazine four years in a row.

Jayme Stone's Folklife

A concert featuring Jayme Stone. In 2015, "Jayme Stone's Lomax Project" was released, focusing on songs collected by folklorist and field recording pioneer Alan Lomax, whose collections reside at the American Folklife Center. Stone brought together distinctive and creative roots musicians to revive, recycle and reimagine traditional music. The repertoire includes Bahamian sea shanties, Sea Island spirituals, Appalachian ballads, fiddle tunes and work songs collected from both well-known musicians and everyday folk: sea captains, cowhands, fishermen, prisoners and homemakers. His 2017 project, "Jayme Stone's Folklife," takes a similar tack with more great traditional music.

Dennis Stroughmatt et L'Esprit Creole: Upper Louisiana French Creole Music from Missour

By an amazing string of chance events, young Dennis Stroughmatt came upon the descendants of French Midwestern settlers, and he spent over three years in southeast Missouri learning to speak Illinois French Creole, play the fiddle, and sing many of the traditional songs that have thrived in the region for over three hundred years. He would also go on to live, work and play music in the "Cajun country" of Louisiana, and to study in Quebec, thus completing the circle of French culture in North America. With the blessing of the Creole people of the Midwest, Dennis Stroughmatt et l'Espirit Creole are its passionate ambassadors, expanding interest and excitement in a region that has been, in many ways, ignored by the history books. As a result, the French music, language, stories, and culture once hidden away in the Missouri Ozarks now has a voice in the wider world. As they say in the hills: "On est toujours icitte: We are still here!".
