Blind harmonica player and singer Sonny Terry recorded a few records during the 1930s and 1940s, but found wider fame in the folk revival of the 1950s and 1960s. This recording features a washboard band—an ensemble that includes washboard, washtub bass (a development from the African earth bow), bones, and sometimes guitar, or as heard here, harmonica.

These selections are from a Dock Boggs concert at Appalachian State University (Boone, NC) on November 11, 1966. Accompanying Dock on guitar and singing is Kate Peters Sturgill. Both were from near Norton in Wise County, Virginia (Kate helped her cousin, A. P. Carter collect songs in the 1930s). Dr. Cratis Dearl Williams, founding Dean of the ASU Graduate School, and who is considered the father of Appalachian studies, arranged for the concert. Wilson Roberts was in attendance and recalls, "…the room was small, the lighting allowing for easy eye to eye contact between audience and performer.” There are several references to Doc Watson who, with his son Merle, was in the audience." Dock also talks about the origins of some of his songs and how he came to make them his own. Although best known for its jazz releases, Fred Gennett's self-named Gennett Records label also did extensive recording in the rural folk genre, tracking various singers and string bands from the South in the 1920s and 1930s. This expansive four-disc set compiled by Chris King collects nearly 100 of these rare sides issued between 1927 and 1934, including early recordings by Ernest Stoneman, the Red Fox Chasers, Fiddlin' Doc Roberts, and a trio of lovely claw hammer banjo pieces from John Hammond. Modern country grew out of these kinds of back-porch performances, and what they lack in polish and sleekness they more than make up for with pure heart and soul.

The eldest daughter of Maybelle Carter, she performed with her mother and her younger sisters, June Carter and Anita Carter, as a member of The Carter Sisters and Mother Maybelle, a pioneering all female country and folk music group. After the death of A.P. Carter in 1960, the group became known as The Carter Family. Album recorded January 22, 1993 at the Delivery Room, Nashville, Tennessee.

In the late 1950s the daughters stopped performing, but Maybelle Carter remained with the Opry until 1967. The folk revival of the late 1960s revitalized interest in the Original Carter Family, and Maybelle performed at the Newport Folk Festivals 26/28 July 1963.

1928 Edison Recordings contains all 22 tracks that Ernest Stoneman recorded for Edison in 1928. On these sessions, he was backed by a string band, which gave him and his autoharp a fuller sound, yet this music remains pure, direct and rural -- his versions of traditional numbers like "The Prisoner's Lament," "I Remember Cavalry" and "Fallen By the Wayside" are startling in their openness.

The New Harmony Sisterhood Band, formed in the mid-seventies from among students at the Goddard-Cambridge Graduate School for Social Change, draws on the folk idiom for style, and the women's liberation movement for inspiration. This 1970 release records the shape note singing convention in Houston, Mississippi. As is the tradition with shape note signing, songs are first sung using notes "fa-so-la-mi," then with lyrics. Each voice part is equally balanced, consequently submerging the tune because all parts (except bass) are sung by both men and women. Liner notes compiled by Amelia Ramsey include a history of shape note singing and background on each song. An illustrated essay by Frederic Ramsey Jr. provides more information on the Mississippi community.

While they may not have been the most dynamic of the Appalachian string bands of the early '20s, the Carter Family was certainly the most subtly innovative, beginning with Maybelle Carter's bass string-heavy guitar playing. Combined with A.P. Carter's knack for spotting a good song and the trio's clear, haunting vocal style, the music they made has given them a secure spot as country's first big stars. More importantly, A.P.'s collection of Appalachian folk songs (although he is listed as the composer of many of them, he simply collected and refined them) has given American country music a solid historical base and he undoubtedly saved countless songs from oblivion (songs like "Coal Miner's Blues," "No Depression," "Engine 143," and "The Little Black Train" can have their survival into the 21st century traced to the versions that the Carter Family recorded). The Carter Family's recording career officially ended on October 14, 1941 when the original line up of A.P., Sara, and Maybelle did a final session for Victor Records, but it wasn't really the end of the story. Sometime preacher and borderline con man Clifford Spurlock approached A.P. a dozen or so years later about reuniting the trio for a series of recordings for his Acme Record Company. Maybelle had established herself as an artist in her own right by this time, so A.P. took Sara and their children Janette and Joe Carter into the studio for sessions in 1952 and then again four years later in 1956, essentially tracking do-overs of previous Carter Family songs like "Keep on the Sunny Side," "Wildwood Flower," and "Wabash Cannonball" along with several religious and sacred titles and the occasional new song. Most of these "comeback" recordings were either never officially released or were distributed poorly and this two-disc, 58-track set is the first time they've all been compiled and assembled together. There's nothing startling here (unless you count the corny and intrusive train sound effects that someone thought would be a good idea to add to "Wabash Cannonball"), and while "new" songs like the "Railroading on the Great Divide" and "The Titanic" are minor treasures, these Acme sessions function more as an addendum to the earlier Victor material rather than as any kind of major restatement of the basic template. That said, collectors will love this set, and if the Carter Family didn't exactly invent the wheel with these 1950s recordings, they didn't really have to, since they pretty much perfected the wheel thirty years earlier. -- AllMusic Review by Steve Leggett

This is the second incarnation of the Golden Ring, a group of folk performers that originally gathered at the Fox Hollow Festival in the early 1960's, and contributed to the 1964 release A Gathering of Friends for Making Music, one of the most influential recordings of the Folk-Legacy label.
