American writer and humorist Mark Twain wrote this ribald satire "1601" in 1876. Set in the court of Queen Elizabeth I, the story begins with an incident of flatulence and careens wildly into the subject of virginity. Twain clearly had fun with words and their hidden and not so hidden meanings. English-born self-styled minstrel Richard Dyer-Bennet gives a delightful reading of Twain's work and sings six bawdy classic folk songs to round out the recording.
