[Notes]
On Old Man Below, The Dust Busters point the way for a new generation of old-time music devotees. Standing squarely in the lineage of the New Lost City Ramblers, their reverence for tradition runs deep while their interpretations bring fresh meaning and a sense that their music is as contemporary as any other. Dust Busters mentor and Ramblers elder John Cohen joins Eli Smith, Walker Shepard, and Craig Judelman in this solidly grounded, future-looking album of classic melodies that makes the legacy of yesterday the sound of today. 60 minutes, 36-page booklet with photos and extensive notes.

[Notes]
Side A: Recorded (in Mono) in Fairfax, VA. on April 19, 1965 Side B: Recorded (in Stereo) in Stuttgart, Germany on Oct. 23, 1969.
John Jackson was an excellent country blues musician whose repertoire also included reels, mountain music and folk tunes. This was an outstanding collection of vintage material done in what was about as contemporary a fashion as you could get in that genre in the mid-'60s. -- AllMusic Review by Ron Wynn

[Notes]
For most listeners, Blind Boy Fuller's "Truckin' My Blues Away" (on Yazoo) may be a better bet than Columbia/Legacy's East Coast Piedmont Style, since it actually has a higher concentration of strong material, capturing the influential bluesman at his peak. All of the 14 tracks were recorded between 1935 and 1938, and there are a number of exceptional performances here, including "Homesick and Lonesome Blues," "Truckin' My Blues Away," "I Crave My Pig Meat," "Walking My Troubles Away" and "Sweet Honey Hole." It's a nice, concise introduction and, best of all, there's no duplication between this disc and East Coast Piedmont Style, making the two discs wonderful complementary collections that tell a comprehensive story when taken together.-- AllMusic Review by Thom Owens

[Notes]
In an attempt to break away from the caricature of black music that was popular in America during the 1950s, Harold Courlander compiled this collection as documentation of black music in Alabama in its purest form. This first volume of secular music highlights some of the different manifestations of black music during that time including the virtuosic harmonica playing of Joe Brown, the left-handed guitar playing of Willie Smith, and the popular ring games of school children.

[Notes]
Classic African-American Ballads is a sampling of an important, historic, and engaging slice of America's Black music heritage. The heyday of the Black ballad tradition (1890-1920) left a lasting strain of creativity and a monument to African American life of the time. Ranging from songs created from the heritage of the English ballad, to social commentary vilifying abusive white authority figures, to "blues ballads," this album reminds us of the enormity and constant evolution of African American musical tradition. 36-page booklet. 22 tracks. 67 minutes.

[Notes]
This collection features country ragtime from 1917 to 1935—a genre that mixes the syncopation of African-American rhythms with the melodic structure of European dance music. As these recordings demonstrate, musicians created different mixtures of these elements: some rags sound more like the blues, while others are closer to European quadrilles.

[Notes]
As it did with blues and jazz, the early recording industry missed the beginnings of ragtime. Luckily, the burgeoning player piano industry produced ragtime tunes on paper rolls, and these rolls augment the recordings we have. This collection presents ragtime played on piano rolls as well as on instruments like the banjo, which were suitable for early recording processes.

Fiddle Tunes from Mississippi Commercial and Informal Recordings
In 2015 University Press of Mississippi published Mississippi Fiddle Tunes and Songs from the 1930s by Harry Bolick and Stephen T. Austin to critical acclaim and commercial success. Roughly half of Mississippi's rich, old-time fiddle tradition was documented in that volume and Harry Bolick has spent the intervening years working on this book, its sequel. Beginning with Tony Russell’s original mid-1970s fieldwork as a reference, and later working with Russell, Bolick located and transcribed all of the Mississippi 78 rpm string band recordings. Some of the recording artists like the Leake County Revelers, Hoyt Ming and His Pep Steppers, and Narmour and Smith had been well known in the state. Others, like the Collier Trio, were obscure. This collecting work was followed by many field trips to Mississippi searching for and locating the children and grandchildren of the musicians.
Previously unheard recordings and stories, unseen photographs and discoveries of nearly unknown local fiddlers, such as Jabe Dillon, John Gatwood, Claude Kennedy, and Homer Grice, followed. The results are now available in this second, companion volume, Fiddle Tunes from Mississippi: Commercial and Informal Recordings, 1920–2018. Two hundred and seventy musical examples supplement the biographies and photographs of the thirty-five artists documented here. Music comes from commercial recordings and small pressings of 78 rpm, 45 rpm, and LP records; collectors' field recordings; and the musicians’ own home tape and disc recordings. Taken together, these two volumes represent a delightfully comprehensive survey of Mississippi's fiddle tunes. (Read more...)

[Notes]
Any label could rest on its laurels having released only one album such as this, a collection of fiddle solos with occasional vocal interludes that hardly sound anything like a smooth Nashville country singer, to put it mildly. Yet this music is the source of so much bluegrass and country, and much more. It is a kind of playing that reaches a state that would be somewhere over the rainbow, well beyond the reaches of a typical Nashville record or a slick set by a bluegrass group at a festival. This music is also a dialogue with and about nature. One moment Jarrell is a man, the next he is speaking in the voice of a rooster or a dog, like some kind of Chinese chen player. He is photographed sitting on a chair in some backyard or farm, and these are definitely outdoor sounds, like so much vintage old time music. Jarrell's fiddle rings with numerous overtones as if notes were bouncing off nearby foothills. It almost feels as if his each of his four strings is a different instrument, and one of them is definitely a set of bagpipes. The label provides a great deal of interesting written material including fiddle tunings and backgrounds on each song. In this type of material the concept of authorship is that the performer starts out with traditional material, but once a certain amount of his own flourishes are added it is considered to be his own composition or version of the song.-- AllMusic Review by Eugene Chadbourne

[Notes]
First released in 1963, and later reissued by Smithsonian Folkways to commemorate the folk publication Broadside Magazine, Broadside Ballads, Vol. 1 features artists such as Blind Boy Grunt (Bob Dylan), Peter La Farge, Phil Ochs, and Pete Seeger. With topical songs that vary in subject from civil rights to Vietnam and the nuclear arms race, Broadside Ballads, Vol. 1 is at once a staunch and elucidating account of a generation at odds with the world around it. Recorded in Broadside’s cramped New York apartment, the album is spontaneous and intimate in approach and features vocals, guitar, banjo, and drums. Contains the tracks "The Ballad of Old Monroe," "Faubus Foibles," "I Will Not Go Down Under the Ground (Let Me Die in My Footsteps)," "Only a Hobo," "Talking Devil," "Ain’t Gonna Let Segregation Turn Us Around," and "I Can See a New Day," which are not on The Best of Broadside 1962-1988.

[Notes]
The Kentucky Colonels are heard at the 1964 Newport Folk Festival on this Vanguard CD. A quartet at the time, as fiddler Scotty Stoneman had not yet joined the band, their performances include both instrumentals and vocals, with bassist Roger Bush also serving as the MC. Guitarist Clarence White, mandolinist Roland White, banjo player Billy Ray Latham, and bassist Roger Bush seem effortless as they delve into bluegrass favorites like "Shuckin' the Corn," "Sally Ann," and "Shady Grove," though there are a few surprises in store. Doc Watson joins Clarence White for six intricate guitar duets (including White's arrangement of "Soldier's Joy" and Watson's chart of "Lonesome Road Blues"). Several of the numbers near the end of the CD actually feature the Kentucky Colonels backing banjo master Bill Keith, who later joined Clarence White in the short-lived group Muleskinner. While there are a few spots where the sound is a tad overmodulated, this vintage live music will be of great interest to serious bluegrass fans.-- AllMusic Review by Ken Dryden

[Notes]
Featuring 26 recordings by 26 different musical acts that were active in the late 1920s, 'Tell It To Me' presents a diverse and dynamic overview of Appalachia's vernacular music at the cusp of the Great Depression. While representing a range of genres and styles and showcasing both secular and sacred material, this album is thematically unified by the fact that all of the tracks hail from commercial location recording sessions held by Columbia Records in Johnson City, Tennessee, during successive Octobers in 1928 and 1929. With 25% of the released sides from those two Johnson City recording forays, 'Tell It To Me' documents timeless performances from the 1928-1929 sessions and bolsters recent assertions by discerning aficionados of 78 RPM records that those sessions generated a particularly memorable canon of historical recordings.

From the Moses Asch archives comes a pair of early blues, gospel and jazz compilations. Lead Belly, celebrated albeit volatile American folk and blues singer / guitarist, graces this first volume with "Defense Blues" and "Keep Your Hands off Her," but you'll also find powerful performances in the Josh White's bluesy "Careless Love," the stacked harmony of The Thrasher Wonders and Sister Ernestine Washington’s plaintive query "Does Jesus Care?" over backing by Bunk Johnson’s Jazz Band. Volume One continues on FW00AA2.
