The Covered Wagon is a group of GIs from the Mountain Home Air Force Base in Idaho, who adopted their name from an Air Force security code used when coming upon suspected sabotage; hearing it, everyone is required to "unite in the face of a common enemy"— that is to say, war, racism, and injustice. The liner notes include lyrics of the songs and an in-depth description of the Covered Wagon and how they came about.

In 1964, Harry Smith (who compiled the Anthology of American Folk Music) was held for a week in the Anadarko, Oklahoma, jail on suspicion of stealing guns, and there he met several Kiowa Indians who introduced him to peyote rituals and songs of the Native American Church. In 1973, Smith returned to Anadarko to record. He decided to set up his equipment in singers' homes or his hotel room, rather than at an actual ceremony, because the Kiowa often sang the songs in casual settings; he also would be able to record commentary.

Joe Lee "Big Joe" Williams (1903–1982) was a legendary country bluesman. A performer for over 40 years, Williams began his career in the 1920s playing at local fish fry’s, house parties, and work camps in Mississippi and Alabama. He eventually traveled north to St. Louis in 1934, where he recorded his iconic hit "Baby, Please Don't Go." In 1971, Arhoolie founder Chris Stratchwitz arranged to meet and record Williams in Crawford, Mississippi. Due to a performance rights issue, the recording was not released until 1999

This issue of Fast Folk Musical Magazine travels to Los Angeles. In an essay for the magazine, Los Angeles Times music critic Steve Hochman suggests that the acoustic music scene in LA during the late 1980s was "a marking of the simultaneous ending of a musical cycle and the beginning of new one." The music in this collection reflects that assessment, with selections ranging from acoustic pop to acoustic country and lots of modern folk songs filling out the set. Emerging West Coast musicians on this recording include Peter Case, previously with The Plimsouls, his future wife Victoria Williams, singer and music producer Marvin Etzioni, Joyce Woodson, and Milo Binder singing an early performance of "New Toys." A 20-page facsimile of the magazine is included.

Nineteenth–century American sacred music was largely influenced by European classical musical standards and practices but tempered by a more straightforward (and simpler) American approach. On this 1980 recording, the 15-member Isaiah Thomas Singers, under the direction of David McKay, present a program of 19th–century sacred American music ranging from ornate polyphonic music to a tuneful rarity by Stephen Foster. The singers are accompanied by organist Stephen Long, an authority on early American pipe organs.

Originally intended as a teaching aid for senior high school social studies and covering a broad scope of civic, government, economic, citizenship and immigration issues, this compilation provides a provocative mid-century impression of America culled from witnesses to the first half of the twentieth century. We are treated to songs from Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger and Malvina Reynolds; speeches from Theodore Roosevelt, Dwight Eisenhower, Martin Luther King, Jr. and Williams Jennings Bryan; so-called "brag talk" by cowboys; and pronouncement of an oath of loyalty by Chief John Oberly of the "Osage Tribe of Indians" affirming that he will not conspire with any political parties to overthrow the US government.

This album contains songs from the Pawnee, whose historic territory stretches through much of Nebraska and into Kansas, though most Pawnee were relocated to Oklahoma. Regina "Gene" Weltfish (1902–1980), a student of anthropologist Franz Boas, began studying Pawnee culture and linguistics in 1928 and published The Lost Universe: Pawnee Life and Culture in 1965. Mark Evarts, a Pawnee, was Weltfish's principal informant on a wide variety of topics including the classification of plants, Pawnee definitions of bravery, and his native Skidi language. He also sings the 45 songs on the album, recorded in 1936. Details of Pawnee traditions, entertainment, and culture are included in the liner notes, as well as details of each of the tracks, translated and interpreted by Weltfish.

Recorded on St Lawrence Island by Miriam C. Stryker in 1966 this album features songs from the Yup'ik people who have long occupied the Island and who live in two separate villages Savoonga and Gambell. Yup'ik legend tells of the Island's formation: "The Sea Goddess, picking up a handful of ooze from the bottom of the sea, squeezed it between her fingers, forming mountains that are part of its interesting terrain." This rugged terrain means a hard life for a people who live off the land. The songs relate through subjects such as hunting, fishing, boats, animals and the like. The lyrics are often very sparse and sometimes the song consists solely of chanted syllables. Liner notes include history of the Yup'ik and song information.

Blind as the result of an industrial work accident, James Campbell (1906–1981) became an itinerant guitarist/singer leading a street band in Nashville from the 1930s into the 1960s. Carter’s repertoire was a mix of blues, country, jazz, old-time popular, minstrel, skiffle, and jug band music. In the early 1960s, Arhoolie founder Chris Strachwitz recorded Carter surrounded with his band in Carter’s living room. What the band lacked in musical polish, they made up for with spirit, authenticity, and vitality. This collection contains music from both recording sessions and features Beauford Clay on violin.

Born in North Carolina in 1911, Bill Johnson started playing the banjo at the age of eight. With his son Billie Ray on guitar and grandson David on fiddle, he leads three generations of talented mountain musicians in this collection of murder ballads and folk songs. All the instrumental songs are what Johnson calls "old tunes." They have been handed down through the generations and can still be heard on front porches and at dances in the Western North Carolina Mountains. Vocal tunes, including "Knoxville Girl" and "Poor Ellen Smith," are also featured.

Folk singer Sheila Clark sings songs of tragic love. The first four songs of the set tell the story of Tom Dula and the murder of Laura Foster, who may have been his fiancé. The title song "The Legend of Tom Dula," is the best-known, due in part by the 1958 folk hit "Tom Dooley," made famous by the Kingston Trio. The five remaining songs include several Child ballads ("House Carpenter" and "The False Knight"). Clark sings and plays guitar with instrumental backup by David Johnson. The Nootka people, now referred to as Nuu-chah-nulth, live along the coast of British Columbia, Canada, on and around Vancouver Island. Their music shows a clear history of polyphonic tradition, which the liner notes claim to be the earliest instance in the region. Song leaders begin some vocal songs unaccompanied, but then are joined by followers and drum beats. On many tracks, the musicians offer introductions; the inclusion of the spoken word is significant because it gives both a more complete picture of the singer and a glimpse into the cultural significance and meaning of the songs. The fieldwork experience gathering songs in this region was very challenging due to the fact that each individual song was traditionally personally owned, and permission from the owner was needed in order to sing it. Dr. Ida Halpern (1910–1987), an Austrian-born Canadian musicologist who studied not only the Nootka but also several other coastal tribes of British Columbia, collected these tracks.
