Over 5,000 people have liked my Facebook page

American Riits Music

The "American Roots Music" page I administrate on the social media Facebook page has had more than 5,000 likes. Many people may be wondering why a Japanese person would be interested in a page about American music. The site also has pages on Japanese ukiyoe and otaku culture created by foreigners, and in that sense, I don't think it's strange. The gender and age of those who "liked" the page. Let's take a look at the aggregate data on the gender and age of the people who "liked" the page. This is an estimate based on the information provided in the user's profile. The largest number of both men and women are aged 65 and above. This is surprising since social media is associated with young people. This is an estimate based on various factors such as age and gender entered by users in their Facebook profiles.

利用者

I once received a message from someone who found out that the administrator was Japanese, asking me to write in Japanese, but I replied that there were more foreigners. The top ten most viewed sites by country are as follows. The number in parentheses is the number of people.

  1. United States (3,337)
  2. Japan (274)
  3. United Kingdom (236)
  4. Canada (120)
  5. Australia (93)
  6. France (77)
  7. Italy (73)
  8. Germany (47)
  9. Brazil (47)
  10. Sweden (44)

As you can see, the overwhelming majority of visitors are from the United States, followed by the English-speaking countries of the United Kingdom, Canada and Australia, and Europe, where most people speak English. Japan is second, but I think that's because it includes my Facebook friends. There are many pages with more than 10,000 visitors, so 5,000 is not a very impressive number. However, the current number of Facebook friends is 1,295, and since this is a unique theme, I guess you could say I have gained a good number of fans. So far, I've described milestones in units of 1,000 people. The next milestone is 6,000, or in Japanese terms, "六里塚", but I'm not sure when that will be.

[Notes]
Originating in England, the religious sect known as the Shakers arrived in the U.S. in 1774, led by "Mother Ann" Lee. Called Shakers by outsiders, due to their agitated movements during worship, they created a musical legacy of thousands of songs, some original, some adapted from outside sources. One of their songs, "Simple Gifts (The Gift to Be Simple)," has become widely known through composer Aaron Copeland's having incorporated it into his ballet Appalachian Spring. On this recording, the combined Glee Clubs of Smith College and Amherst College present a concert of Shaker songs, all sung in traditional unison style. A Fanfare, played on trumpet, opens the program. The liner notes present Shaker history and culture and excerpts from the songs, both words and music.

John Fahey (guitar)
Art Direction: Jamie Putnam, Designer: Linda Kalin
[Notes]
In the 1960s, Fahey was the type who gave future discographers nightmares by not only re-recording albums in their entirety and issuing them under the exact same title, but using the exact same catalog number. This is a 1967 re-recording of the 1963 album Death Chants, Breakdowns and Military Waltzes, although only ten of the 12 tracks are re-recordings; the other two ("The Downfall of the Adelphi Rolling Grist Mill" and "Dance of the Inhabitants of the Palace of King Philip XIV of Spain") are the original versions from the 1963 LP. The material, of course, is still outstanding, so the differences to note are in the playing. The fidelity is clearer, and having improved his technique Fahey probably felt more satisfied with these renditions. But as often happens on remakes, it must be said that the originals have an intangibly more affecting, more mysterious quality that does not come through as strongly on the more carefully executed rehauls. You don't have to agonize about choosing between one or the other anymore, because the 1967 version of Death Chants is now available on CD, on a single disc (Takoma TAKCD-8908) that also includes the harder-to-find 1963 version of Death Chants.-- AllMusic Review by Richie Unterberger

Dave Fredrickson (guitar/vocals)
Liner Notes: Roger Abrahams, Designer: Ronald Clyne
[Notes]
By his own admission, Dave Fredrickson is less a folk singer than a singer of old-time songs. He performs, with his guitar, in the relaxed style of the cowboy singers of days gone by, and his diverse repertoire is drawn from cowboy records, traditional singers, field recordings from the Library of Congress, and from books. His renditions of what he calls "Okie" and "Hillbilly" music convey a warmth and integrity that can be heard throughout this compilation of night-herding songs, ballads, and musical accounts of cowboy life. Liner notes include excerpts from a letter by Fredrickson, song lyrics, and notes on the songs.

[Notes]
Mary Lou Williams, the "First Lady of Jazz," was an extraordinary pianist, composer, arranger, and master of blues, boogie woogie, stride, swing, and be-bop. Williams' complex harmonies and brilliant phrasing, rooted in spirituals and blues, border on the avant-garde. Black Christ is both a powerful secular statement and a call to the divine. Duke Ellington said, "[She was] beyond category—a pianist who sums up in herself the full essence of jazz and expresses it with skill and perception that few other jazz musicians have even approached." Originally issued in 1964, this CD contains an additional 4 unreleased tracks, new extensive liner notes, and historic photos. 53 minutes.

[Notes]
Called "The Mayor of MacDougal Street," Dave Van Ronk (1936-2002) was a leading figure in the Greenwich Village music scene for more than four decades. He epitomized the urban "folksinger"— apprenticing through immersion in the music revival's New York City epicenter of Washington Square Park. Drawing from and developing a wide repertoire of songs, guitar techniques, and performing skills, he mentored younger musicians and songwriters such as Bob Dylan, Jack Hardy, Suzanne Vega, Christine Lavin, and many others. Down in Washington Square includes 16 never-before-released recordings coupled with tracks from the Smithsonian Folkways archive, spanning early live recordings made in 1958 (one year before his first Folkways album) to his final studio recordings in 2001, just months before his death. It paints a musical mosaic of Van Ronk's artistry and expands his legacy, keeping alive the genius of a legendary performer who inspired audiences, musicians, and a major motion picture — Inside Llewyn Davis, written and directed by Joel and Ethan Coen. Three CD box set, 54 tracks, nearly three hours of music, 40-page booklet with extensive notes.

Selections represent a broad spectrum of American folk music, from Puerto Rico to the north coast of Alaska. Extensive liner notes, written by Charles Edward Smith, delve into the characteristics of American folk music and provide detailed information, with lyrics, for each of the 25 selections.

Recorder and Liner Notes: Archie Green and Eugene W. Earle
[Notes]
The first incarnation of the Carolina Tar Heels, featuring the group’s mainstay, Dock Walsh, first performed and was recorded in the late 1920s. Featuring a shifting line-up in the coming years, a recording of Walsh and company, billed as the Tar Heels, was featured on the groundbreaking 1952 compilation the Anthology of American Folk Music. On this recording, originally released by Folk-Legacy Records in 1962, Walsh is joined by his son Drake and longtime collaborator Garley Foster for a program of old-time music and Appalachian folk songs. In addition to four original compositions, the 17 tracks have Anglo-American or African American origins, reflecting the context of "race records" and "hillbilly music" surrounding the group’s first performances decades earlier. Filled with feeling, this collection stands in good company with other great Appalachian field recordings of the era, and is a special title in Folk-Legacy's early catalog. Extensive liner notes include comments detailing the history of the group and songs.

[Notes]
In the spirit of the "golden ring", this album exemplifies the communal, non-competitive, joyous music-making by friends at Folk-Legacy Records on Sharon Mountain. The comforting grace of Lucy Simpson leading hymns, Peter and Mary Alice Amidon brightly blending, the trio Rock Creek (Wally Macnow, Tom McHenry, and Bill Destler) adding richness and fullness to each song, and Caroline Paton lending her harmony make for a warm chorus that invites you in the circle to sing along. These songs are rooted in the tradition of American spirituals that remain a timeless source of renewal for all.

Liner Notes: Len Holsclaw, Photographer: Jim McGuire, Engineer: R.D. Homer
[Notes]
Not only does Award Winning Country Gentlemen culminate a major shift in direction for the Country Gentlemen, it is also quite possibly their finest album. Charlie Waller had to reassemble the group in the early '70s, bringing in a new lineup -- including mandolinist Doyle Lawson, bassist Bill Yates and banjoist Bill Emerson -- that helped move the Country Gentlemen even further into contemporary music. On Award Winning, the band covers songs by rock and folk songwriters like Bob Dylan and Gordon Lightfoot, bringing a bluegrass attitude and instrumentation to the contemporary numbers. The result is a stunning record, with a great selection of songs and simply stunning musicianship.-- AllMusic Review by Thom Owens
