[Notes]
Zydeco music, which melds French, Native American, and blues traditions, is popular among the many French-speaking Black Creoles living along the Texas-Louisiana Gulf coast. That its appeal reaches well beyond the region is partly because of Clifton Chenier, who is often credited with introducing the music to audiences outside of his native southwestern Louisiana. This collection features some early recordings by Chenier; he plays accordion and sings in French Creole patois and English.

A New Orleans native, Eaglin lost his sight as a young child, and he crafted his unique sound with just his voice and a guitar he received as a birthday present. First recorded by folklorist Harry Oster in the 1950s, his musical repertoire included blues, country, and folk, all sung in his soulful style. His career continued into the 21st century with appearances at iconic New Orleans venues and the annual New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival.

Doc Tate Nevaquaya (1932-1996) expressed his Comanche heritage musically through the Native American flute. His compositions and arrangements of a variety of Native American vocal genres have inspired a new generation of Native American and nonnative flute players. Although the older flute tradition declined during the first half of the 20th century, when many of the old melodies are no longer played, Nevaquaya inspired the creation of new and innovative flute compositions, creating an extensive repertoire for the instrument. With the flute’s revival during the 1970s, the flute’s context, function, and music changed. Nevaquaya played an important role in this movement, retaining tradition on one level, but manifesting ideas for change. 43 minutes. Originally issued as in 1979 as Folkways Records 04328.

From parties to protests to prayer, music is a powerful catalyst for celebration, for change, and for a sense of community. Through making music together, we become bigger than ourselves. Whether singing with our families and friends or with thousands of strangers in an arena, music transforms lives, engages individuals, and connects local and global communities. The Social Power of Music chronicles the vivid, impassioned, and myriad ways in which music binds, incites, memorializes, and moves groups of people. This richly illustrated 124-page book, with 80+ tracks on 4 CDs, invites listeners into musical practices, episodes, and movements throughout the U.S. and beyond. These songs of struggle, devotion, celebration, and migration remind us that music has the potential to change our world.

According to producer Harold Courlander, "in some parts of the Americas it is possible to find old African songs and dances that are still know' in almost identical form in local African communities." The album includes songs such as "Ingane Kamalume" from South Africa, "Jesha Cult Song" from Brazil, and "Didn't You Hear My Lord When He Called?" from Alabama, USA. [Notes]
"These two recordings were made from field tapes recorded over a period of several years during which we enjoyed repeated visits to friends on Beech Mountain in northwestern North Carolina. When programming them, we found it appropriate to divide them as we did. On the first volume you will find a number of Child ballads and ancient songs, plus gospel songs from the days of the old camp meetings. The second volume contains songs that have entered our tradition more recently, along with several hymns as they are sung in harmony today in the little church in Beech Creek. These two recordings are important and authentic examples of home-made music in the Appalachian tradition." -Sandy Paton, Folk-Legacy Records

[Notes]
The Kutchin (also known as Gwich'in) Indians live across Central and Eastern Alaska, the Yukon, and the Northwest Territories. Their vocal music represents the more traditional way of experiencing music―unaccompanied singing. Their instrumental music, especially played on the fiddle, reflects the influence of explorers, traders, and missionaries on musical tastes. The Gwich’in adopted not only the music that whites introduced but jigs, reels, and square dances. There are several instances as well of Gwich’in adapting Native dance forms to this Western style of music.

[Notes]
Initially released in 1965, Who's That Knocking? is the first album by Hazel Dickens and Alice Gerrard. With this trailblazing record, Hazel and Alice shattered the glass ceiling of male-dominated bluegrass, which had typically relegated women to minor musical roles at best. Hazel and Alice’s hard-edged, soulful harmonies were firmly rooted in the older music traditions of the rural South. Their steadfast devotion to their powerful, driving style inspired generations of women in bluegrass, country music, and even punk. They are accompanied on this album by Chubby Wise, arguably the architect of bluegrass fiddling; David Grisman, whose mandolin improvisations changed the landscape of acoustic music; and Lamar Grier, who played banjo as a member of Bill Monroe’s Blue Grass Boys in the 1960s. Unavailable on vinyl for decades, Who's That Knocking? was remastered in 2021 by its original producer Peter K. Siegel, and has been reissued with its original artwork and liner notes.

Radio John: Songs of John Hartford is Sam Bush’s heartfelt tribute to his hero and mentor, John Hartford. With dedication, admiration, and love, Bush takes on personal favorites from Hartford’s vast catalog, including songs he played with Hartford on stage and in the studio in the 1970s. Bush plays every instrument on nearly every cut, pouring himself into the performances. Radio John is a testament to the impact Hartford had on American traditional music as a songwriter, an instrumentalist, and, most importantly, someone who fostered the careers of musicians like Bush and countless others reinventing roots music in the last half of the 20th century.

The soaring harmonies and driving string-band sound of Hazel Dickens and Alice Gerrard shattered the glass ceiling of male-dominated bluegrass in the 1960s. Hazel and Alice’s influence on music – and not just roots music – is hard to overstate. They’ve been acknowledged by artists as diverse as country superstars Naomi and Wynonna Judd, champion flat-picker Molly Tuttle, and proto-feminist punk rocker Kathleen Hanna. Their steadfast devotion to their own hard-hitting style inspired generations of women in bluegrass. Pioneering Women of Bluegrass: The Definitive Edition collects all the songs from Hazel and Alice’s two groundbreaking Folkways albums, and a previously unreleased bonus track, all remastered by their original producer Peter Siegel. They are joined on these recordings by such bluegrass legends as Chubby Wise and David Grisman. The CD booklet includes an expanded set of essays by Hazel, Alice, Laurie Lewis, and Peter Siegel, as well as iconic photographs by John Cohen and Carl Fleischhaue.

[Notes]
This collection of old-time social and instrumental string-band music spotlights instrumental prowess. Old-time music features playing styles that pre-date bluegrass, emerging from the string band tradition stretching back to the early years of United States history. Both African-American and Anglo-American ingredients are at its core, the banjo having African origins, the fiddle European. Some of the most revered sources of old-time roots music—Dock Boggs, Roscoe Holcomb, Wade Ward, Tommy Jarrell, and more—are heard playing in their original styles. The Grateful Dead's cover of "Don't Let Your Deal Go Down" and Bob Dylan's rendition of Clarence Ashley's "Little Sadie" clearly attest to the continuing influence of these songs. Compiled and annotated by Jeff Place.

Inspired by the courageous acts of these students, Guy Carawan compiled this collection of songs which chronicles the history of the Tennessee sit-ins, peaceful protests in reaction to the unfair and discriminatory practices of storeowners in Nashville. [Notes]
Beginning in 1977, renowned folklorist Art Rosenbaum traveled around northern Georgia making field recordings of songs learned from the oral tradition. The outcome was a two-volume anthology and a book by the same title. The first half of Volume 1 features "early mountain songs, ballads and tunes" ranging from ancient British ballads to more recent breakdowns and love songs. The second half presents "black religious singing" (traditional spirituals), some of which are recorded in a local church. Rosenbaum's liner notes provide detailed information about the singers and each song, as well as complete lyrics and photographs of the musicians and singers.

[Notes]
In the final volume of three recorded for Folkways Records, the Iron Mountain String Band recreate the sound of old time Appalachian mountain music from the pre-bluegrass era. The band's repertoire is made up of distinctive ballads, songs, and dance tunes, learned from 1950s field recordings from rural southwestern Virginia. With guitar, fiddle, and banjo, intricate and rhythmic dance tunes are represented by tracks such as "Chicken Reel." You can also hear melancholic songs of local and world events including "Cruel War," a plaintive ballad originating from the British Isles. Liner notes include a history of Southern Appalachian mountain music and song notes and lyrics.

Trebor Tichenor (piano)
Producer and Liner Notes: Trebor Tichenor, Designer: Ronald Clyne, Photographer: Floride Green
[Notes]
Blessed by ragtimer Eubie Blake, Trebor Tichenor plays the "real stuff." Rags, Tichenor comments, "retain strong ties to the country" — maintaining notably midwestern and southern roots—and are characteristically endowed with folk strains "ebullient" or "ribald," "wistful" or "bittersweet." Tichenor's originals include "Wine Room Rag" and "Hickory-Smoked Rag," but this recording also features pieces from contemporaries Charles Hunter, Robert Hoffman and Percy Wenrich.
