[Notes]
Originally released by Folk-Legacy Records in in 1976, Harry Tuft's Across the Blue Mountains is a collection of traditional and new folk songs in the spirit of the folk revival. First an important figure in the Philadelphia folk scene of the late 1950s, in the 1960s in Colorado Tuft went on to establish the Denver Folklore Center, one of the city's most significant venues for folk music, welcoming the likes of Doc Watson and Leo Kottke. On Across the Blue Mountains, Tuft plays arrangements that sound both traditional and contemporary, inspired by trends in fingerstyle guitar playing from the 1970s. Highlights include a gorgeous 12-string rendition of The Mermaid (Child 289) featuring Ed Trickett, and a version of Lord Gregory (Child 76) taught to Tuft by the great Karen Dalton.

Ry Cooder (guitar/mandolin/banjo/vocals) Taj Mahal (harmonica/guitar/piano/vocals) Joachim Cooder (drums/bass)
Liner Notes: Ry Cooder and Taj Mahal, Engineer: Martin Pradler
[Notes]
Taj Mahal and Ry Cooder played together during the mid-'60s as part of roots rock band Rising Sons and cut an unreleased album for Columbia. In 1968, Cooder, then 17, played guitar behind Jesse Ed Davis on Mahal's eponymously titled Columbia debut. The raucous, woolly, Get On Board: The Songs of Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee places them in the studio together for the first time in more than 50 years. All 11 songs are drawn from the Terry-McGhee catalog, including three that originally appeared on the guitar-and-harmonica duo's 1952 Folkways recording Get On Board (even the album cover was modeled on the original). Terry and McGhee made records, but as fresh fare for their many live performances -- they toured constantly during the '50s and '60s. Their influence and impact on Mahal and Cooder is incalculable; it completely informed their long careers. Though this pair are grizzled veterans, they perform with the joy of a Saturday-night jam session, rendering the material with rowdy exuberance, killer vibes, and chops galore.- AllMusic Review by Thom Jurek

[Notes]
In 1956, the New York City–based folk group The Wagoners were approached by Bob Miller, a regional director of the B'nai Brith Youth Organization, to record an album of children's traditional camp songs. The Wagoners, composed of vocalists Judy Goldsmith and Bronni Friend, guitarist Lenny Feldman, and banjo player Ben Schwartz, are assisted by a group of children in the singing of 18 camp songs. Included are popular sing-along songs like "Crawdad Song," "My Little Rooster," and "Saraspunda." Camp director Bob Miller offers tips to camp counselors regarding song choice and performance instruction. The instructions are followed by lyrics for all the tracks.

[Notes]
Despite a performing career that began in the 1940's and involved the likes of Charlie Parker and Sonny Stitt, Washington, D.C.'s Nap Turner had gone unrecorded until 1999's Live at City Blues. 2002's Live at Cada Vez, originally released on the Right on Rhythm label, was his follow up effort. Performed with the Gary Jenkins Quartet, Live at Cada Vez continues to showcase Turner's deep familiarity and knowing interpretation of mid-century electric blues, including new versions of songs by Percy Mayfield, T-Bone Walker, and more. Interspersed between the blues, Turner offers dramatic readings of one-time D.C. resident Langston Hughes, speaking to the deeply rooted history of Black art and culture in the District.

Will the Circle Be Unbroken
# Author John McEuen
# Publisher: Backbeat (August 1, 2022)
# Hardcover : 264 pages
# ISBN-10: 1493062336
# ISBN-13: 978-1493062331
The 1971 collaboration of legendary Nashville bluegrass musicians and the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, a Southern California country-rock-jug group, was the genesis of Will the Circle Be Unbroken, which Rolling Stone magazine would declare "the most important album to come out of Nashville." In this definitive, beautifully illustrated book, McEuen gives an inside look at the making of a landmark album, covering each of its thirty-eight songs and sharing previously unseen photographs taken by the author and his brother Bill McEuen, who produced the recording. The story of the album begins after the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band's cover of "Mr. Bojangles" became a surprise hit, when McEuen invited Earl Scruggs to join the band on a new project. Scruggs said yes—as did Doc Watson, Merle Travis, Jimmy Martin, Vassar Clements, Roy Acuff, Mother Maybelle Carter, and other country stars. For six days in the summer of 1971, the musicians sat in a circle facing one another, recording country and bluegrass standards in East Nashville's Woodland Studios. Out of that magical collaboration came one of the most iconic albums in American history, one that melded musical worlds, bridged generations, and captured the essence of Americana. Now, after fifty years, John McEuen invites readers to join him in the circle, hear the stories, and listen to the music.

[Notes]
Women singers abound on today's country music scene, but 40 or 50 years ago it was a different story. Rose Maddox, who began performing on country radio stations in the 1930s and started recording in the 1940s, was one of the female pioneers in the field. After launching her career with her brothers in the country group the Maddox Brothers and Sister Rose, she pursued a successful solo career and later recorded with Buck Owens and Bill Monroe. More recently, Maddox performed with members of the Vern Williams Band, a country and bluegrass group, who accompany her on this CD compilation which showcases her still-strong voice and exuberant delivery. The set, drawn from two albums originally released in the early 1980s, includes folk traditionals such as Woody Guthrie's "Philadelphia Lawyer" and gospel staples such as "Amazing Grace."

[Notes]
Originally released by the Western Jubilee Recording Company, Hooves of the Horses is Wylie & The Wild West's musical tribute to Equus caballus—the domesticated horse. The record features sixteen selections celebrating horses, riders, and the experience of the saddle. Built mostly from front man and Grand Ole Opry veteran Wylie Gustafson’s original compositions, it also presents thoughtful renditions of tunes from Johnny Cash, Buddy Holly, and legendary cowboy singer Bob Nolan. In a heartfelt and playfully somber tone, Gustafson writes:
"When it comes time to chisel my tombstone, I hope the term 'horseman' will be included to describe what I accomplished in this world. And more importantly, I hope it will be said that I was fair and kind to God's greatest beast."

Producer and Recorder: Moses Asch, Liner Notes: Ewan MacColl, Designer: Ronald Clyne
[Notes]
The "Child Ballads" are a large collection of 305 songs from England and Scotland compiled by Francis James Child in the late 19th century. Here, Ewan MacColl presents 7 of these songs, sung without accompaniment. MacColl explains the notion of the ballad: "Defined in its simplest terms, the ballad is a folksong that tells a story … is always narrative, and is always learned from the lips of others rather than by reading." The songs presented here all detail historical events from Scotland and England. It is appropriate then that they are sung by MacColl who himself played a role in English history through his affiliation to the communist parties of the 1930’s which hindered his musical career at the time. His roots in the laboring class add authenticity to the concept of the ballad which grew out of the "popular" lower classes. Liner notes include some song information and lyrics.

Since the liner notes include only the title of each track, it leaves the purpose of this album open to the imagination: is it for use in at an actual summer camp, or for use as background noise in a film about camp? Whatever its original purpose in 1964, this album compiles a series of tracks that would be useful for a variety of background noises in TV, radio, Film and the like.

[Notes]
This album of songs mostly composed in the early 1960s includes two songs by Malvina Reynolds, as well as "The New York J-D Blues," composed by a New York teenager puzzled by a misguided subway ad campaign about juvenile delinquency. Much of the material included in this collection was printed in the influential folk music magazine Broadside, and several songs—including "Mack the Bomb" and "The New York J-D Blues"—appear on Smithsonian Folkways' The Best of Broadside (SF40130).
