[Notes]
This 1958 recording by Edith Fulton Fowke is a collection of folksongs from the province of Ontario sung by a myriad of traditional singers. Until Fowke began collecting these in the 1950's, most had never been heard by a general audience. Though a large portion of the songs on this recording come from the Irish-Canadians of the Peterborough region, many other songs trace their influence back to American and British roots. These stirring compositions cover everything from lumber-jacking to murdering to the married life.

[Notes]
The Inuit of the Canadian Northwest Territories follow two seasonal social patterns: hunting with families in the summer, and gathering for trade and intense spiritual activities with large communities in the winter. Traditionally, when these groups reunited at the start of the long, dark winter, they exchanged songs. Each person is believed to be a composer and performer; each song is a gift to be reciprocated, and the sharing of songs and dances was a way to strengthen the social fabric. Many songs on this album are about hunting, but it was forbidden to exchange songs whilehunting, or even while outdoors. The Inuit believed that under an open sky, "a spirit could steal the words and by seizing the breath of the singer, rob him of his life."

Guy Logsdon's notes about Cisco's life provide a rich background and complement this collection. Includes A Better World A Comin', I Ain't Got No Home, and Rambling, Gambling Man. Producer, Recorder and Annotator: Ida Halpern
[Notes]
The music of the Haida tribe in the Pacific Northwest is shrouded in secrecy from outsiders, largely as a response to their visual art being exposed by European missionaries in the 19th century. As a result Haida elders sought to protect their music from western influence. Haida songs are constructed of a unique speech-vocal style and foundation tones which tell the story of each piece and direct each ritual. Musicologist Ida Halpern collected a number of recordings of Haida songs from tribespeople eager to keep their heritage alive and was the first scholar of native music of this region. This album contains songs about love, celebration, war, drinking, and dialogue between Halpern and the singers. Liner notes include musical analyses of each song, as well as interviews with artists involved in the project.

[Notes]
Featuring performances from six tribes - Ojibway (Chippewa), Menominee, Blackfeet, Hochunk (Winnebago), Kiowa, and Lakota (Sioux) - the 13 tracks on American Warriors document more than a century of Native American participation in warfare. Album producer and Smithsonian ethnomusicologist Thomas Vennum, Jr. calls the collection "...a concept that was long overdue; a recording whose release would draw attention to the often overlooked participation of American Indians in the United States Armed Forces, and at the same time directly honor Indian veterans by helping to create a national memorial for them." The compilation of American Warriors was inspired by a 1994 Congressional mandate to create a memorial honoring Indian war veterans and was the recipient of the 1998 Native American Record of the Year at the Native American Music Awards (NAMMY’S). Tracks include descriptive spoken introductions, protective war songs, and the ritual song, drumming, and dance styles of the powwow. American Warriors: Songs for Indian Veterans was issued in 1997 as part of "THE WORLD" series (now part of the Mickey Hart Collection made available by Smithsonian Folkways).

[Notes]
Recorded in The Bahamas, the music on this album exemplifies the mix of the sacred and secular in gospel music. Such standards as "Give Me That Old Time Religion," sung in the ensemble's deep voices, sound much like pop music of the '50s and '60s. Liner notes include black-and-white illustrations by Ben Shahn and song lyrics.

Recorder: Emory Cook
[Notes]
This is a comic demonstration of "hi fidelytie" that claims to be "the record to end all high fidelitie records." The liner notes continue, "In fact, it is questionable as to whether it might not be the last hi fidelyty record. In many cases the user will find it impossible to play,— but no matter; that is not necessarily unusual for hi fidelity." But unusual this is: the collection of sounds on this record range from jets and steam trains to a baby's wailing to Mexican firecrackers and a highly distorted church organ.

[Notes]
The Chippewa (Ojibwe) occupy the largest area in tribal North America, spanning from Ontario and Michigan in the east to Minnesota in the west. This album focuses on the Chippewa people of Minnesota, who were first studied by Frances Densmore and Frederick Burton in the early 1900s. Densmore was interested in preserving the songs of the older singers, especially since such songs were more at risk of being lost. The music on this recording falls into three categories: moccasin game songs, social dance songs, and pow-wow songs. Liner notes include several photographs, a background to the Chippewa culture, and transcriptions of melodies heard on the recording.
