[Notes]
The lifestyles, philosophies, and traditions of the Navajo nation are represented by songs for herding, planting, harvesting, hunting, blessing hogans, and soothing children. The 1933 and 1940 field recordings from settlements in New Mexico and Arizona beautifully document a music largely vocal and highly melodic with relatively short song phrases repeated, divided, and combined in intriguingly complex ways. Recorded by Laura Boulton. Compiled and annotated by David McAllester and Charlotte Frisbie. "...[A] vocally rich collection..." — The Patriot Ledger

[Notes]
The border between Mexico and the United States stretches some 1,500 miles, from Brownsville, Texas/Matamoros, Mexico, to San Diego, California/Tijuana, Mexico. The existence of physical barriers (the Rio Grande River, fences, and walls) has not diminished the rich musical culture that has flowed back and forth across the border. This collection presents an introduction to some of this important music, beginning with recordings from the 1920s and continuing into the 1960s.

[Notes]
The Blackfoot, purportedly known as such because of their dark-colored moccasins, originally ranged across the northern Great Plains region (Montana, Alberta, and Saskatchewan). These recordings, made in different settings from the late 1890s to the mid-1960s, capture a period when Blackfoot lifestyle, culture, and music underwent major change. They also represent evolving fieldwork recording methods during those seven decades, as phonocylinders and phonowire gave way to tape recording.

[Notes]
Although the Miramichi is a river, the name is used to describe an entire region of northeastern New Brunswick. Generations of settlers fished in its waters, felled its timber, and celebrated their heritage through music. The songs on this album, recorded during the 1959 Miramichi Folksong Festival, date from the 18th and 19th centuries and are performed in the traditional style, often by an unaccompanied solo performer. Nine of the 10 songs are in English, with "The Petit Moine" sung in French. The Folksong Festival, Canada's oldest, continues to this day. Liner notes include details of the Miramachi, song lyrics, and an introduction to each track by historian Louise Manny, the originator of the festival.

[Notes]
For the Cree, Montagnais, and Naskapi hunters whose songs are represented on this album, success in hunting was crucial because for a time it provided the only means of subsistence. Hunters treated their hunting trips with great devotion and seriousness. Before heading off to hunt, the men would sing songs that had originated in or described dreams they had of the location of game and of their success; all songs, having materialized in dream, were personal and no hunter sang another’s song. Presented here is a collection of personal hunting songs recorded on an Indian settlement in Scheffervilee, P.Q., Canada in 1964.

No-No Boy & Mariachi Los Broncos

Producer: Julian Saporiti, Liner Notes Editor: Carla Borden, Photographer: Noyel Gilmore, Art Director: Emilia Halvorson, Designer: Darryl Norsen, Engineer: Tim Beken, Seth Boggess and Mike Monseur
[Notes]
The cultural and geographic lineage of No-No Boy's newest single "La Banda Más Chingón en Wyoming" is layered and deeply American: a mariachi rendition of a folk-country song about a 1940s Asian American swing band composed in Wyoming by the son of a Vietnamese refugee from Nashville performed in Southern California. The song is a bilingual reimagination of "The Best Goddamn Band In Wyoming" from the 2021 No-No Boy album 1975. Julian Saporiti and Emilia Halvorsen Saporiti are joined by Mariachi Los Broncos, whose bandleader Jessie Vallejo drew thematic connections between the Japanese internment camps that Saporiti so vividly sings about and the detention centers set up at the US Southern border overfilled with Latin American migrants. The mariachi's bold exuberance underscores the song's triumphant perseverance in the face of bigotry and life-shattering oppression by the state.
The single's B-side "Nitro '66 Cannonball Blues" is a brand-new No-No Boy song featuring The New Celestial String Band. As understated as the A-side is boisterous, it takes inspiration from the traditional "Cannonball Blues," approaching the tune from the perspective of a Chinese American immigrant railroad worker who, after building the transcontinental train lines that laid the groundwork for massive cultural and economic expansion, was deported back to China in 1885. The song is heartbreaking and full of life, highlighting Saporiti’s masterful storytelling and creative production techniques.

[Notes]
Mercy Dee (born Mercy Davis Walton, August 3, 1915 – December 2, 1962) was a jump blues pianist who found fame after spending years working the fields in Texas. Troublesome Minds is a testament to the natural talent Mercy Dee possessed when it came to picking up rhythms from his blues background and melding them with the style of Texas pianists. The junction of the two styles plus Mercy Dee’s own prolific lyricism made him into a popular singer and performer on not just the West Coast, but across the country. The songs range from humorous to self-pitying, all are from the heart of Mercy Dee.

[Notes]
"As you listen to the tracks on this CD, you'll find they have a few things in common. The artists are singer-songwriters from the Hudson Valley who play mostly acoustic instruments. The songs are vocals ranging from about two-and-a-half to five minutes in length. But other than that, they are not easy to categorize . . . Each song is a unique musical statement by a single artist, or sometimes a small group, working independently at the creative process. So how did this diverse collection of musicians end up on one CD? The answer lies in a musical community that has evolved in New York State's Hudson Valley, bound together in recent years by an organization called the Musicians Alliance." - Walt Graham.

[Notes]
As a magazine-recording combo publication, Fast Folk (founded by Jack Hardy in 1982 and acquired by Smithsonian Folkways Records in the late''90s) provided an outlet for some of the most recognized songwriters like Suzanne Vega, Lyle Lovett and John Gorka. This edition hails from L.A. in November 1993 and brings the voices of Paul Sanchez, Wendie Colter and others together with acoustic folk guitar accompaniment. Randy Kaplan gives a fantastic parody on the one-time seemingly unending open-mike protest singers: "You gotta sing those political songs loud and throaty in order to sweat and seem sexy."

[Notes]
This 1956 educational compilation was edited by famed German musicologist Curt Sachs (1881-1959). Sachs was a co–creator of the Sachs–Hornbostel system of musical instrument classification, which the album showcases using examples from previous Folkways recordings. The album begins with the most basic percussion, foot–stamping and hand–clapping. It continues with various membranophones (skin–sounders), idiophones (self–sounders), aerophones (wind instruments), and chordophones (stringed instruments), and finishes with various examples of orchestral combinations of them all. The liner notes include an introductory essay by Sachs along with photographs and a discography of the source material used.

[Notes]
When some American Indian medicine men and women were called upon to heal an ailing tribesmember, they would fast in order to receive a song in dream or vision instructing them in how to carry out the treatment of their patient. This is one of the many insights on American Indian healing practices reported by Dr. Frances Densmore. Over the course of 50 years, Dr. Densmore collected more than 2000 recordings of American Indian customs and traditions in song. Compiled in this LP are recordings of medicine men from a diverse representation of tribes singing and chanting those songs, delivered to them in dream by external powers and spirits, that they used to heal the sick.

Champion Jack Dupree (piano/vocals)
Producer and Liner Notes: Charles Edward Smith, Photographer: David Gahr, Designer: Ronald Clyne
[Notes]
Orphaned at age 2, William Thomas Dupree grew up in the same New Orleans boys' home where Louis Armstrong first played the cornet. Continuing his music education with barrelhouse piano musicians, Dupree became known for his gritty yet soulful piano blues and boogie–woogie style. During the Depression, he started boxing for a living and earned the nickname "Champion Jack," which stuck with him for the rest of his life. Here, Dupree's theme is clear: "Bad women and good women. Hard times… hot hands, and hot music." Liner notes include lyrics, photos, and an introduction by Charles Edward Smith.

[Notes]
"At one time the area or Central and South America was the home of diverse Indian cultures and civilizations ranging from the nomadic hunters of Tierra del Fuego and Patagonia, to the river and forest peoples of the Amazon, to the military empires of the Andes and Central Mexico, to the theocratic states of southern Mexico and Guatemala. Many of the peoples that once inhabited these lands today are extinct or on the verge of extinction. Others have been assimilated into the dominant European culture and have given up the traditional ways. Perhaps the largest number though have remained, almost if in historical limbo, conquered but not assimilated..." Alan Lazar

[Notes]
The Debusk-Weaver Family pays tribute to early pioneers of country music, the Carter Family. Donald Weaver on guitar (and autoharp on several tracks), wife Linda on autoharp, and Linda's parents, Burton and Mary Debusk, on rhythm guitar and autoharp, respectively, sing songs closely associated with A.P. Carter, wife Sara, and sister-in-law Mother Maybelle. Sessions for this album began August 1, 1977, marking the 50th anniversary of the Carter Family's first recordings during the influential Bristol sessions. Among the songs covered by the Debusk-Weavers is "Keep on the Sunny Side," originally recorded by the Carters in 1928. The album is dedicated to Mother Maybelle, who passed away prior to the recording’s release. The liner notes are written by journalist Hal Bruno. Lyrics and recording information are also included.

[Notes]
In an attempt to break away from the caricature of black music that was popular in America during the 1950s, Harold Courlander compiled this collection as documentation of black music in Alabama in its purest form. Placed in the context of homilies and prayers this second volume of religious music captures the essence of black spirituals found in the south and features the popular hymn, "Free At Last."

[Notes]
Recorded on St. Lawrence Island by Miriam C. Stryker in 1966 this album features songs from the Yup'ik people who have long occupied the Island and who live in two separate villages Savoonga and Gambell. Yup'ik legend tells of the Island’s formation: "The Sea Goddess, picking up a handful of ooze from the bottom of the sea, squeezed it between her fingers, forming mountains that are part of its interesting terrain." This rugged terrain means a hard life for a people who live off the land. The songs relate through subjects such as hunting, fishing, boats, animals and the like. The lyrics are often very sparse and sometimes the song consists solely of chanted syllables. Liner notes include history of the Yup'ik and song information.

[Notes]
The Highly acclaimed 1995 Smithsonian Folkways release, Heartbeat: Voices of First Nations Women, introduced the public to a rare and dynamic but little-known Native American music. This new recording offers more material traditionally sung by tribal women and music that is ordinarily sung or played by man but recently performed by women as well. Heartbeat 2 includes social and ceremonial dance songs, war, honor, and story songs from Native North America, as well as music in contemporary styles, including flute songs, poetry set jazz, and pop-oriented folk song. Produced in collaboration with the National Musuem of American History.

[Notes]
Catchy melodies, individual interpretation, and flashy technique epitomize "novelty" ragtime, a style of ragtime that emerged after World War I. This recording features "the effervescence of authentic ragtime" through virtuosic performances by composer-pianists, and includes a rare solo by Clarence Jones, one of the few black musicians to record novelty rags.

[Notes]
Recorded live at the Fast Folk Café on July 6th 1995, this album features "18 of New York City's most promising songwriters" of that time. Fast Folk founder Jack Hardy introduces the album with an article in the liner notes on the process of songwriting. "Why do we do this?" Hardy asks; and answers: "If we slow down the world by stopping the chatter of the mundane we can begin to marvel at the simplest of ordinary objects and events. We begin to see the terrible beauty in everything."
