With a culture deeply influenced by 19th century Scottish emigration, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, is widely celebrated for its fiddle music. Profoundly rooted in old Scottish tradition, the music is increasingly moving to center stage in the contemporary Celtic revival, as seen in the popularity of Cape Breton fiddlers Natalie MacMaster and Ashley MacIsaac. This CD features some of the best known and most admired Cape Breton fiddlers, with piano and guitar accompaniment in the island's distinct style. The sound of the island is alive in these exciting performances, recorded live at dances and concerts in Cape Breton during the summer of 2000. This is the real thing, master fiddlers playing in the heart of the tradition, along the Ceilidh Trail.

David "Honeyboy" Edwards embodies the continuity from blues' Mississippi Delta roots to electric Chicago blues. Honeyboy's string-snapping guitar riffs and soulful voice harken back to his friends and teachers Charley Patton, Big Joe Williams, Tommy Johnson, and Robert Johnson, who first forged the blues in Delta jooks and at country suppers during the Depression. Edwards crisscrossed the South in the company of such blues giants as Big Walter Horton, Sonny Boy Williamson, and Little Walter Jacobs. He settled in Chicago, where a post-WWII electric blues boom set the pattern for modern rock and roll. This recording captures him in a relaxed, unplugged, solo moment. Eva Ybarra: Queen of the Accordion

Eva Ybarra, the "Queen of the Accordion," is one of on.y a few professional women accordionists in conjunto music. Ybarra has specialized in writing and composing original conjunto music while also exploring non-standard chord progressions, advancing the art form's evolution. After receiving her first record deal at age 14, she has performed and recorded many albums with her band, Eva Ybarra y Su Conjunto. Her notable recordings include "A Mi San Antonio" (1993) and "Romance Inolvidable" (1996). She has also served as a music educator and artist in residence at the University of Washington, Palo Alto College (San Antonio) and the Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center. Ybarra is in the Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center Conjunto Hall of Fame, the Tejano R.O.O.T.S Hall of Fame, the Univision Salon de Fama and the Tejano Conjunto Music Hall of Fame and Museum. In 2015, she received the South Texas Conjunto Association Lifetime Achievement Award.

Doc Watson, grandfather of the folk revival movement, has had a profound influence on American traditional music. Not only did he pioneer the playing of fiddle tunes on a flattop guitar, but through his incessant touring has brought traditional music to a larger audience. This Smithsonian Folkways release captures not only Doc Watson, but almost a dozen family members at the height of their power and has been deservingly hailed as a classic recording. Right from the opening track, "Old Groundhog," Watson and family send the listener on an amazing journey into the American musical past and present. Incidentally, their performance of "Old Groundhog" is certainly the equal of Bascom Lamar Lunsford's "I Wish I Was a Mole in the Ground," in terms of surreal country, capturing as it does race relations, commentary on shoe strings, as well directions for catching a groundhog. On "The House Carpenter," a weepy tale of that conflates religious and personal love, a haunting female voice sings almost off-key accompanied only by a fiddle that doubles on the melody. On the instrumental "Bonaparte's Retreat," Watson offers a droning, sea shanty-influenced version of this song staple of Mississippi river communities. Some of the family's best work is found in the spirituals scattered about the album. "When I Die" features a beautiful, uplifting three-part harmony, as does "The Lost Soul," which contains the wickedly abject refrain, "I'm paying now/the penalty." A fabulous record that's a must-listen for any serious fan of American music. -- AllMusic Review by Brian Whitener

In the midst of the singer/songwriter era, Arlo Guthrie chose to become his generation's true folk singer, closer in spirit to Pete Seeger than to James Taylor, more an interpreter than a prolific songwriter. In this role, he kept songs alive that may have been forgotten or were never known, and recorded songs from the pens of his contemporary peers. Last of the Brooklyn Cowboys follows a formula similar to its predecessor, Hobo's Lullaby, with one exception -- there is no hit single à la "City of New Orleans." However, this release has some very strong material woven into its mix. Guthrie gives his father's "Gypsy Davy" a bouncy Caribbean feel, breathing new life into this tale of wanderlust in a way probably not envisioned by Woody Guthrie. He also pays tribute to Hank Williams with a yodeling rendition of "Lovesick Blues," and delivers his customary Dylan song. This time it's "Gates of Eden," featuring the fingerpicked electric guitars of Clarence White and the bottleneck slide of Ry Cooder. The album also contains two of Guthrie's finest original songs, "Last Train" and "Cooper's Lament." (AllMusic Review by Jim Newsom)

Folk singer Sheila Clark sings songs of tragic love. The first four songs of the set tell the story of Tom Dula and the murder of Laura Foster, who may have been his fiancé. The title song "The Legend of Tom Dula" is the best-known, due in part by the 1958 folk hit "Tom Dooley" made famous by the Kingston Trio. The five remaining songs include several Child ballads (“House Carpenter" and "The False Knight"). Clark sings and plays guitar with instrumental backup by David Johnson. The liner notes, written by album producer John R Craig, provide information about the legend of Tom Dula and complete lyrics for all the songs.

Sharp declared the traditional English ballad a "moribund" art form, he discovered a rich and thriving tradition of ballad-singing in America's southern Appalachian Mountains. Jean Ritchie, a tradition-bearer from Appalachian Kentucky, shares some of her favorite "story songs" of murder and romance. Although characteristic of the state of Louisiana, Cajun music has its roots in the French-speaking Acadian population of Canada. The lives of those French colonists were wracked by political discord, war, and for some families, deportation; after the Seven Years' War (1756–63) many sought refuge in Louisiana. On this recording, humorous ballads and lively reels, bolstered by accordion, fiddle, and guitar accompaniment, belie the harsh experiences of the Acadians. Album producer Lucie de Vienne describes how the superimposed elementary rhythms give these songs a "jazzy" atmosphere shared with other French-derived folk songs in the Caribbean. The liner notes include a history of the Cajun people, musical notations, and song lyrics in Cajun French and in English.

Pete Seeger recorded Songs of Struggle and Protest on Folkways Records in 1964, just three years after testifying before the House of Un-American Activities Committee and during the height of his blacklist status. The songs have a rich history - some are written by Woody Guthrie and The Almanac Singers, a group of folk musicians who often sang for worker’s rights, and others hearken back to the Wobblies (The Industrial Workers of the World) who unionized in 1905. They are the very sorts of songs that got Pete blacklisted - songs of common humanity, struggle, and protest. He is known for having an enduring optimism and commitment, and the track "I Don’t Want Your Millions, Mister" illustrates Seeger’s talent to lead a crowd in song. Detailed liner notes contain lyrics, historical, and contextual information for many songs. Before you listen, consider this quote from his trial transcripts: "I am proud of the fact that my songs seem to cut across and find perhaps a unifying thing, basic humanity."

American folklorist Harold Courlander compiled this series (Negro Folk Music of Alabama) from recordings he made in rural Alabama in 1950. The album is an attempt to counter the stereotypes of black music that were popular in America during the middle of the 20th century. This sixth volume begins with ring and line games which were recorded at various rural Alabama schools. Ring games are played with children standing in a circle, often holding hands; the leader stands outside the circle performing some action. To get the idea, imagine "Duck, Duck, Goose." (The identical ring game recordings are found on FW07004.) They are followed by miscellaneous children's songs, work songs, blues, hymns, and relatively modern gospel songs.
